I have a few questions about how to get my subtitles sorted out and working the way I would like. In short I'd like all subtitles for foreign languages to be enabled by default. I had initially been doing this by enabling "forced" subtitles in my Emby settings however I am finding that some of the subtitles that I want are not marked as "forced" but as "default" or not marked as either.

What is the correct way to handle subtitles for foreign audio, "forced" or "default"?

On a second note, does anyone know of any software to modify subtitles? MKVToolNix?

First q, no idea.  2nd q, yes, really powerful utility.

Have you cycled through the various subtitle mode options in your emby user settings?

You know what, I set it such a long time ago I didn't realize there were more options. I will try out "Smart" and "Default" to see if it works better for me. Thanks

Thanks for the feedback.

Are your subs for the entire movie or only for parts of the movie? If only part, mkvtoolnix is what you want. You can open the movie in the header section, change the setting to forced and save. Done! You can't edit the subs with toolnix but you can alter it's behavior. The forced setting in emby will only work if the track is defined correctly in the container. Otherwise it's just another subtitle track.
