Whilst individual image thumbnails have the correct orientation

The Photo Media Library and the Folders within the Photo Media library do not show thumbnails in the correct orientation.

Were these photos taken in Australia...?  ;)

Seriously, just curious, were they taken with an iPad?

yes upside down on all clients...the above "grenada" and "cats" are subfolders of the photolibrary..if i click into these subfolders the images are right way around. my guess from the symptomd is that the sub function which respects exif orientation for single images is not present on the library and library subfolder thumbnail generation function. is this not seen by any one else? should be easy to reproduce on any set of photos that are corrected by exif orientation metadata. i remember there was a time when individual image thumbnails were not corrected for orientation..this i assume is similar...

images taken on galaxy s8+ , a mobile device that readily takes photos in an upside down orientation, depending on how you hold the device.

I am seeing the same thing. I am running Emby server 3.2.26.0 like the OP, and like the OP, the thumbnails and main images are shown correctly oriented on a Samsung Smart TV. However, using the web client on a set of Photos, multiple levels of thumbnail show up incorrectly oriented. However, once viewing the main images, they are shown correctly oriented.

I've since upgraded the FreeNAS plugin to 3.2.32.0, and nothing has changed.

I would suggest clearing browsing data in case that might have an impact. Thanks.

This is tricky to explain, and probably tricker to believe...

1. Clearing the cache on my desktop browser (Firefox) had no effect.

2. Disabling all addins also had no effect.

So I decided to try some alternate browsers: Chrome on both my desktop and my phone. To explain, my Photo folder structure is organised by date:

- YYYY

- DDMMYYYY

- .jpg

This is displayed by Emby as 4 levels like this:

1. YYYY as green rectangle with a white "YYYY" label in the centre, and also bottom left where it is on a dark green patch).

2. YYYYMMDD as a selected photo, with "YYYYMMDD" centred underneath.

3. Set of .jpgs as each photo with filename-minus-extention centred underneath.

4. Each .jpg as full window

In the problem cases, my desktop Firefox renders level 2 and 3 with the photo in the wrong orientation (i.e. not orientation corrected).

HOWEVER, both desktop Chrome and phone Chrome render only level 2 in the wrong orientation.

How can I help debug this further?

can you zip up some sample images for testing? thanks.

I have an example directory with two jpg images (actually the one I described above), which is 4MB in tgz format. What's the best way to get that to you short of leaving them on the internet for all time?

You can just attach it here and then delete it later on.

Sorry for the delay, here you go.

Since this is FreeNAS, is this another image processing issue?  Tested these files in Windows, beta net framework server 3.2.33.5 without issue.

@happy2play: Since I'm in the middle of a browser session talking to Emby, the suggestion that the FreeNAS environment hosting it might be at issue is surprising me. But if there has been a history of such things, I guess I cannot argue against that.

@luke: Server log as requested: near the end of the log, at 21:27 is a sequence ending with navigation down the problem path. The Emby user was "baba". Let me know if you need something with debugs enabled.

Can you restart the server and then attach a log? I would like to see server startup. Thanks.

I see one situation where it might be skipping the auto-orientation, in certain cases. please try again with the next release of emby server. thanks.

IIUC, that means 3.2.34. Thanks Luke, I'll wait and give it a try!

Hello,

I am having this same issue with (AFAIK only with) DNG Raw files. Thumbnails and the actually pictures have the correct orientation when natively viewed in Windows Explorer, Mac OS Finder, and Mac Preview.

However when using Emby Browser, Emby client for Android the thumbnails and the picture are shown on how the phone was held, i.e. sideways or upside down.

I have attached server logs and couple of sample images.

Thanks

Yea i can reproduce but it seems to be because our graphics library isn't detecting the orientation, therefore no rotation is being applied. I may end up just having to report this on their issue tracker.

I finally got round to upgrading to 3.2.36, and the problem is still there. Is it possible that the generated thumbnails are simply missing the EXIF orientation of the original?
