redaktorn 23 Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 (edited) Hi, I have an Android TV (Sony 65") and a Android Nvidea Shield Box (2017). But I never use Emby Theater! My "problems" are two: 1) The login It is simply terrible and make no sense at all. For security reasons I want a longer password and it is not very friendly to use with a remote control. Why does Emby Theater allow only 24 hours to remember my login? And why does it not function when I remove "ask for password" in the options? Using a pin code is confusing and not funtioning in any way understandable. (Also less safe) The so called "D-pad method" is not working. Double click for numbers does not work. Which limits you to number 1,2,3,4,5. Where 5 is same as OK which makes login procedure very confusing. I never managed to login with pin code although several tryouts with different settings. The settings in the Emby server are quite confusing. How is "offline access" in apps supposed to work? I presume server must be online for anything to play? (Or is anybody seriously thinking to syncronize into the limited memory of an Android TV device) If I use my pin code "inside network" I cannot use it outside. Why must I chose inside or outside my network? Anyhow - It would be nice to be continously logged in to my regular TV:s without having to do that every 24 hours! No matter if my TV is remote or inside my network I like to be kept logged in. (preferable using a long secure password that Emby Theater agree to remember) 2) The horizontal layout. I am sorry to say - but I don't like at all to navigate horizontal. Having a large number of Movies and Tv-shows this feels extremly wrong and uncomfortable. Navigating vertical feels (for me) much more natural. Any future changes would be appreciated and would make me consider to use the Emby Theater. (Which is otherwise quite OK to use as a player) All the Best redaktorn Edited July 27, 2017 by redaktorn
ebr 16169 Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 It actually sounds like you are talking about the Emby for Android TV app, not Emby Theater. For issue #1, go to your user setup in the server dashboard and, for each user, click the "Use Easy PIN" check box and provide a short numeric password that is easier to enter with the remote. This password will only work when being accessed from your local LAN so it doesn't decrease the security of the system (unless people get into your house ). Also, if you set the app to always login to your main user and uncheck the "prompt for password" button, then the app will always open in that user. I'm sure this works because it is how I use the system every day.
redaktorn 23 Posted July 24, 2017 Author Posted July 24, 2017 Hi, Thanks for reply - you are correct I speak about Emby for Android. Sorry if I posted it in the wrong place. But the things you suggest is not working. Pin code and login with Android D-pad system is impossible (in both my Android devices). And Emby does not remember my password - even with the setting you suggest. If I don't use the TV for over 24 hours I need to login with my (long secure) password. It is really surprising if this works for you. Or maybe you use your TV more often than 24 hours in between? Because it does not work in my 2 machines and not in my brothers Android TV (a Philips 65"). If we are not using the TV for over 24 hours we are logged out. All the Best Erik Linder
ebr 16169 Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Can you show me the settings page for the app? (take a picture of it)
redaktorn 23 Posted July 24, 2017 Author Posted July 24, 2017 Hi, Thanks again for reply. While I remember I should also mention that in Emby Server it says "if pin code is left blank" I should be able to log in without password. Also that is not true. Attached pictures of my settings. With this setting I cannot log in with pincode. (Not with a 4 digit and not leaving it blank)If I remove the D-pad setting I can log in with my long secure password. But I will be logged out after 24 hours. Maybe you can add a setting for never under the timeout you can chose? (24 hours is maximum as it is now) P.S: If you look the picture of D-pad you see what I mean with double clicks that are not working. Trying to make example 7 gives you 2+2 and not 7. (You will get 2 circular dots indicating 2+2 no matter how quick you double click) All the Best
ebr 16169 Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Yes, I can add never to the options for auto logout. That's a good idea. But, I'm not sure why the Easy PIN isn't working properly but I think that is the root of the issue. As a test, can you try setting up a user with a simple normal password and then set the app to automatically log in that user and see if it works as expected (bypassing the password challenge)?
redaktorn 23 Posted July 24, 2017 Author Posted July 24, 2017 (edited) Hi, I tested with a new user having a simple password and 1234 as pin code. It works "inside network". Although log in is still complicated since pressing OK = a extremely long push at OK. (Otherwise it register digit 5 as part of the pin - or 5+5 if you double click which should be 0 but is not) You need an OK to log in after giving your pin. Would be better if you were logged in direct after correct pin code. Other digits than 1,2,3,4,5 are impossible due to the not working double clicks. Anyhow - this does not solve my problem since I have TV:s outside my network and need these to also be long time logged in. So - if you kindly remember the "never" option in next update I will be very happy. Vertical navigation will make me super happy Any idea when next update might be? Edit: P.S. Still not working with blank pin code. All the Best Erik Linder Edited July 24, 2017 by redaktorn
ebr 16169 Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 You can always just use the regular on-screen keyboard instead of the d-pad entry (that is the default behavior). The "never" option will be in the next beta. 1
ebr 16169 Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 I just tested the blank Easy PIN and it worked as it should. Additionally, when this was the case (the easy PIN is blank by having been reset with the button on that page) the "Prompt for Password" check box is disabled because, since this user does not require a password, it is irrelevant. So, I think this all boils down to your setup not realizing it is on the same local network as the server. Do you use some sort of special setup or did you perhaps login to your server manually using the external IP address?
redaktorn 23 Posted July 24, 2017 Author Posted July 24, 2017 (edited) Hi, I am on the very same network (in this case). If I have no normal password in Emby Server - I pass by the log in screen. But with a normal simple pass and no pin code - I still get a login screen. (The normal screen for password login - not the D-pad) If I try to put just OK, without pass or pin, on that screen I get "incorrect password". To get the D-pad log in screen I must put a pin code (not blank) in Emby Server. If I set D-pad password in only the app (not in server) - I can not login with just OK. I get "incorrect password". As you understand I can not have an account totally without password. Since that also can be reached outside my network. So for the moment my easiest way is the way with a simple pin (using only digits 1,2,3,4,5) But I will anyhow wait for the update of Emby app - because I meanwhile have Kodi and it is OK for me. Kodi and Plex works in Android with out password problems. Kodi does not ask for it as standard and Plex remembers it if you make that setting. Luke 42077 Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Emby Theater will remember your login. Does that answer your question?
ebr 16169 Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Emby Theater will remember your login. Does that answer your question? He's not talking about theater.
redaktorn 23 Posted July 24, 2017 Author Posted July 24, 2017 There is only a Emby for Andoid TV in my Google play. (As well in my Sony TV as my Nvidea Shiled) No other app to chose there. And as discussed above this app forget my password after 24 hours. Which hopefully get fixed to next update adding a "never" option in timeout. All the Best
ebr 16169 Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 How did you login to the server initially? Is it possible you did so with the external IP address? If you go to the "Switch Server" screen, what does the IP address shown there look like? There are a few ways the system could be fooled into thinking you're not on the same network. Is any kind of proxy involved?
redaktorn 23 Posted July 24, 2017 Author Posted July 24, 2017 (edited) Hi, There is only one server and it is showing my server on local network with local IP. So - that is not the problem. But we do not need to dig into this deeper. If you add the "never" timeout option it will solve my problems. Then I just have to wait forever to have vertical navigation Edited July 24, 2017 by redaktorn

The "never" option will be in the next beta. Thanks, You are correct. Using the normal login is better. Then you can use all 10 digits and avoid the "double click" problem. And it works with D-pad pin code deactivated in the app setting. Then normal log in comes as "default. So it makes life a little easier inside my network.
redaktorn 23 Posted July 24, 2017 Author Posted July 24, 2017 By the way - where do I find beta versions of Android TV?(Was searching here in Forum but found no thread about it)
redaktorn 23 Posted July 24, 2017 Author Posted July 24, 2017 Hi, Thank you. I saw that you already added the "never" option. I had to reset my pin but after that it works. I let you know if it keeps me logged in or not after 24 hours. All the Best Erik Linder
tehgeek 1 Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 (edited) I would also LOVE to see vertical scrolling. It's the only thing keeping me on Plex with my ShieldTV and FireTV. I bought a premiere membership to support Emby, but I'd buy another for vertical scrolling. *Edit* - Sometimes when you don't sleep, you type the word you're thinking of instead of the word you want. s/horizontal/vertical Edited July 27, 2017 by tehgeek

tehgeek 1 Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 You probably mean vertical (from up towards down)? It is already horizontal (flat from left to right). Yes. Had a long day. 1
redaktorn 23 Posted July 27, 2017 Author Posted July 27, 2017 Android Open Beta Testing Hi @@ebr, I am happy to tell you that "never" option works OK. Now I am kept logged in as well in my Android TV as in my Shield box Hope you add this in next standard version also (not only in the Beta). All the Best

I greatly prefer horizontal scrolling and it feels more natural to me. Lesson is: choice is good
