nagetech 69 Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 The other night when I was watching TV, some of the people in the room with me (watching tv too) kept wanting to talk, which of course distracts me from the movie as I usually go for full imersion. I kept having to pause the movie to let them finish so I can get back to what I'm doing......and an idea struck me.... Wouldn't it be neat if there was some kind of device, or maybe even just an integration into Emby (or netflix, hulu, etc) that when it detected someone talking that it would automatically pause whatever it was you were watching> (Yes I know the other obvious thing ti do is send the people out of the room, but that is not always an option). That way, you never really miss a moment, and heck maybe as a side benefit, if the person talks enough that the video gets paused several times, they make realize they are a huge distraction and start to self police themselves. What do you guys think?
Jdiesel 1431 Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 How about when it detects talking it in gradually increases the volume to drown out the talking. Keep talking the louder the volume gets lol. On a serious note this seems extremely difficult to implement. How would to distinguish on screen dialog from in room dialog?
nagetech 69 Posted July 6, 2017 Author Posted July 6, 2017 While I am no developer, I'm sure it's 100% doable https://devpost.com/software/netflix-and-pause-ikmhdx I got the idea from that. Someone made a chrome extension that already does that. I like your idea too.... though can be abused the person can keep talking till the sound gets so loud the risk of bleeding ear drums becomes a thing......
mastrmind11 722 Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 I prefer the pause button --shut up method already implemented in most remotes.
nagetech 69 Posted July 6, 2017 Author Posted July 6, 2017 You're right the pause button does work, but there are those moments you may be lets say laid out on the couch and the remote is out of reach on the coffee table.... That's pretty much why my idea came into my mind...just an auto-magic way of content stopping when someone decides to flap their gums @ the worst possible time

nagetech 69 Posted July 6, 2017 Author Posted July 6, 2017 Well yes, but I like the idea of it happening automatically. instead of.... 1. Watching Movie 2. Too much noise/talking 3. grab xbox 1 controller 4. wake up controller (it autosleeps) 5. pause movie (at this point missed some dialog in the movie) 6. Wait for everyone to stop talking / tell everyone to shut up 7. rewind movie 8. Play again My idea: 1. watch movie 2. noise / talking happens 3. movie auto pauses / resumes once silence is retored It sounds great in my head.

No. With Alexa, the only way for her to act is if you say Alexa. If only Amazon would let us set a skill to trigger by default when saying Alexa... Good luck. 1
Guest asrequested Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 One big problem would be is distinguishing between the movie talking and you. Alexa often wakes up when someone in what I'm watching says her name.
chef 3810 Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 (edited) Kinect will do what you want. I have had a lot of time spent with that device and that is possible. Only because you can pinpoint where sound is coming from within the mic array. Between -1 to 0 and 1. That is why there is a setup with Xbox. I know echo has this same kind of tech with its mic array (it is obvious when the blue light try's to circle around the device when it hears you) however as mentioned above, it is not currently accessible form a coding standpoint. I don't have any access to SDKs for the latest version of Kinect, but gen 1 version SDKs had that ability. Zero in on the noise, cancel it and attempt recognition. All while ignoring certain parts of the array. It was cool. Lol. Edited July 7, 2017 by chef
nagetech 69 Posted July 7, 2017 Author Posted July 7, 2017 Well best I can do is keep my fingers crossed and hope this is implemented. I lack the coding know how
Angelblue05 4132 Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 One big problem would be is distinguishing between the movie talking and you. Alexa often wakes up when someone in what I'm watching says her name. Yeah, I've put in a FR to have Alexa not listen to sound coming from specific direction. I don't know if they will ever support this, but it would definitely stop Alexa from having conversation with the TV.
ebr 16169 Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 Yeah, I've put in a FR to have Alexa not listen to sound coming from specific direction. I don't know if they will ever support this, but it would definitely stop Alexa from having conversation with the TV. I doubt it. Kinect can do this because the device is designed to place under your TV. Echo (Alexa) devices, however, are designed to be placed anywhere and listen in all directions. If they made them directional in any way, you'd have to place them in a certain place or direction and that would undoubtedly cause problems. I think the only way they could do this is if they create a dedicated Echo device designed specifically to be placed under your TV.
Angelblue05 4132 Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 (edited) Alexa already knows where the sound is coming from (the blue ring highlights). I thought maybe it could be easy to at least have a virtual setup in Alexa, so she knows, sound coming from a specific location is a TV. I don't think they'll create something specific like that, Alexa for TV... what I heard is they want to go the Cortana direction. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Edited July 8, 2017 by Angelblue05

One idea would be to have Alexa analyze the differences between the TV/surround sound and our voice. There will different acoustics, and just like voice training, maybe calibrate Alexa to ignore the TV sound. 1
Angelblue05 4132 Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 All I know is they need to do something about it, because as is, it's very annoying to use Alexa unless she's in a permanently quiet room. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1

Hi 7illusions,Might you have any links to information on these new features coming to Cortana? It would be nice to have home voice automation/intergration with out adding other hardware/software (maybe mic array for htpc) to already existing win 10 htpc and xbox1 with Emby extender. I thought maybe it could be easy to at least have a virtual setup in Alexa, so she knows, sound coming from a specific location is a TV. Yeah, it also supposedly has some fairly sophisticated distance determination in it so that, if you have two devices that can hear you, it can choose the one closest to respond. However, with surround systems and such and the fact that AV sound systems are trying to be designed to be as realistic sounding as possible, I'm not sure how you could ever get very close to filtering out the sound from the TV.
