Roku or Chromecast

I'm looking at replacing my ageing xbox360 with either a Roku, Chromecast or third option if cheap.  But I am not sure which is the better chose.  This is a unit that will not get used very often its in the bedroom.  I have both wireless and wired so no big deal there.  Both TV and Movies, most movies are MKV.

If it is for infrequent use, and you have another device for the interface (phone or tablet) then I'd be inclined to start out with a ChromeCast.  Testing is going well so, hopefully, that functionality will be available soon.

Personally, I will be buying a Chromecast next rather than another Roku. As Ebr says, Chromecast testing is going really well.

I've had my Chromecast waiting patiently for a while, lol. Bought it from US Amazon but after the initial playing about with Youtube etc it has been dormant until MB kicks in!

To me at least it is all about whether you enjoy having to have another device around or not. As cool an idea as Chromecast is, it is something I personally think is worthless. Same with Airplay. Both those require you to have an extra device to actually do the navigation. The Roku on the other hand actually has a remote and can be programmed into a universal remote to control something that you can navigate on screen. A phone or tablet makes for a crappy remote. Again just personal preference.

I have both as well. We put the roku in our bedroom, which was a tv we didn't use a lot, that is until we put the roku on it. Now we use it a lot. The roku 3 is really a great device and simple to use. With the MB3 app it gives tons of content. I use the chromecast for HBO go and netflix on another tv and works well for that.

I'll chime in with a vote for Roku.  I bought four Chromecast devices when they first came out.  It's an interesting toy, but the lack of ability to control it with a real remote control made it not very useful.  I bought a Roku 3, and love it.  I sold all of the Chromecasts on e-bay.  I plan to buy three more Roku 3's.
