Question about Streaming Methods ?

What is the difference between Direct Streaming and Direct Playing ?

Posted

Not much.  Basically it is the delivery protocol and whether or not Emby Server is delivering it or the file system layer itself.

Direct Playing means the client is going directly to the filesystem using whatever means available to it.

Direct Streaming just means the same exact file is being served through Emby Server via http instead of the file system protocol.

dp = no transcode, ds = remux.  There are at least 2 active topics on this as of today, and another 2 within the past year if you search.

Which brings us back to the original debate(s), and the 2 new ones...  if it's not obvious, why make the distinction in the first place....  "transcode", "remux", "direct".  No more confusion.

So I would think we need a Page or Wiki (to link everyone to) with a description of these actions the way Emby sees it.  Since Direct Stream according to Emby can be more than just a Remuxing.

No, read my response above.  A direct stream does not have to involve a remux (or ffmpeg) at all.

But we need to clarify the reasons why the server would do this. It isn't random. This is where people get confuse.

I agree.
