Emby Theater on Xbox1 Lag

Howdy Everyone!

Recently got an Xbox1, and was excited to replace my Roku with this as far as Emby went.

Gotta say, love the interface!!! But I did run into a problem.....

To give you some insight, I have 3 Movie type folders. One is Documentaries, other is Comedy Stand up & Finally just "movies"

In documentaries, I have about 300 movies in there, Comedy Stand up I have about 200 Movies. When I load those up and go to "all movies" it shows all the movie/coverart pretty damn fast!!

Now here is the problem....

My movies folder has about 6000 Movies in it....When i browse "all movies" it'll load at an OK speed, but then browsing through it is quite laggy/choppy. I can scroll to the letter I want (on the left hand side) and it'll load the first movies in that letter pretty fast, but once again scrolling through the library just has a lot of perceived lag.

Is there a setting I need to tweak or something I can do to help this?

Thanks in advance!

There are three things I know of that will help consistently with this:

  1. If it isn't already, put Emby on a SSD.  This can make a huge difference.
  2. If you're using the cover art plugin, try it without.  If that helps, try different treatment options.
  3. Reduce the number of items on the All movies list by setting up collections and configuring Emby to group movies into collections.  This also makes things a lot easier to scroll through.

Those help anyone.  After that there may be less widely-applicable tweaks.  That's a really large movie collection.  You may simply need more hardware to handle it.

1. My server is plenty powerful I assure you :) Running SSD's for Emby already with 48GB RAM and Dual Xeon Processors. On any other interface (Web App, Roku, iPhone app, etc) It loads quickly.

2. I'll try that suggestion for Cover Art

3. A lot of the movies that belong in collections are in collections. But not all movies go into one..... Like off the top of my head the movie "Split" or "Get Out"

What I notice is in other apps, when you go to "All Movies" It doesn't try to load the whole thing in one shot, it breaks it up into pages. With the XBox1 App, it literally wants to load the whole thing on screen in one shot. Maybe Break it up will help?

Am I the only one with this problem? :)

Say, when you mention "Coverart" do you mean the folder images, or the folder images treated with the plugin.. Coverart?

That is quite a few movies in a library, that could be the issue, although it seems that the interface will try and grab what the user is seeing instead of the entire list. So what happens if you scroll through all your movies from beginning to the end? Does the lag disappear when scrolling through a second time?

I figured maybe if I left it alone and let it all load up and cache everything it would help....I did try force scrolling through the whole thing, but to be honest that didn't help. it was just so laggy the whole way though....

When I select a movie though, it does load up the movie info fast as lightning and starts playback pretty much immediately.

If I select a movie collection "like star wars" It does load those 7 movies super fast.

Maybe a design element change for All movies? where it only loads so much of the collection, and when you get to the bottom of whats there, it'll "auto load" the next section of movies?

just an idea @@Luke

In my experience collections can eliminate about 1/3 of your top level items.  Your mileage may vary based on the collections that make sense to you and your particular movie list.

I've got about 1500 movies.  With collection grouping on, logged in as the user with access to all of them, there is a noticeable delay when loading All Movies but I consider it reasonable.  It's not specific to the xbox in my case.  It's quite comparable to ET on the PC.

One other thing that can help since you mentioned the xbox one, test it using a wired ethernet connection.  I've seen slower loading on the box using wireless, especially when it turned out the xbox was connected to a slower wireless network in my house.

Yes, I'm referring to the plugin.  I haven't done a comparison recently but in the past having it enabled slowed things down measurably.  I really don't want to do without the treatments telling me what's HD and what's not though, so I opted to cope ;)

My guess is it is the plugin, but... I could be wrong.

I noticed a substantial load time difference when I stopped using the plugin. I am also an Xbox one user.

Just to add to it, I do have the Movie Collection Grouping Option already enabled.

I'll see about the plugin setting, but I really think its just the App struggling to show all that stuff :)

@@Luke Maybe an option to let the user customize this a bit? If a user goes into "All Movies" in the Emby Theater app, maybe act like the WebApp a bit where it only displays a certain amount..lets say 100-200 items at a time, and when you scroll to the bottom and want to keep going it'll generate the next 100-200 etc etc......

I wish I could try this with ethernet, but that's just not an option ;( But it is hooked up to my fast wireless!

Hope to hear from Luke :)

Just wanting to add to this.

While I was on my laptop at work, I downloaded ET from the Windows Store (so same version as what the XBOX1 would use, and tested it out. When going to "All movies" it loads very fast and srolls like a dream.....

My XBOX is @ home on my 5ghz Wifi, and when I go to it, it takes a bit to first show the movie list, and then scrolling has a very choppy affect.

So to me that means its something with how the XBOX processes that list.

@@Luke Any ideas Luke?

The app pulls more from the server at a time then it probably should. It's something we'll improve in a future update. thanks !

Thanks for the response Luke!

Hope you can get to it soon, as everyone in my house is ready to Lynch me since I made them convert from the Roku to this. Eveything on the Xbox1 ET is awesome, except for that one little issue.

Is there anything I can do to help you out @@Luke ?

Not at the moment, thanks.

I'm sure the new XB1 Scorpio being announced at E3 next week can handle a lot more, the XB1 or XB1S may not have the oomph to do what it's being asked to do right now

http://www.xbox.com/en-us/project-scorpio

  • CPU: Eight-core 2.3GHz processor
  • GPU: 40 compute units at 1172MHz
  • RAM: 12GB GDDR5 (shared between system and GPU)
  • Bandwidth: 326GB/s
  • Storage: 1TB hard disk
  • Disc: UHD Blu-ray player

I would still think the Xbox1S can handle this if Luke works his magic and optimizes things a bit :) For example, the Roku is "under powered" in comparison to the Xbox1 and it's smooth there. Just a matter of App Optimizing. I'm 100% confident Luke will sort it out hopefully sooner than later :)

Makes me wish I understood coding so I could roll up my sleeves and get in there and help out.

Would be nice if it could be optimized depending on which console it detected at install

Just to add a slight reference, I did go out of my way to test this via ethernet and it was still the same. So with my limited knowledge of app development, my guess is the app is pulling the whole library in one shot, which causes the lag. Being that the xbox shares its RAM between OS & Video, it may spike it and cause the visual stutter I am seeing.

But I'm no expert so don't quote me :)

I have a feeling we are going to see the "all movies" library split up in a future release. We'll probably see some sort of page system like in the Webclient.

That'll be cool!

That's what I'm hoping for :) That is literally the last hump I'm waiting to overcome before totally switching over from the Roku to the Xbox. I love the ET interface a bunch more than the Roku one.
