jhoff80 94 Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 As there starts to be some HDR content available, I'm curious how people are planning on setting up libraries for mixed HDR & SDR devices. As far as I know, there aren't any streaming devices available that convert from HDR to SDR on the fly, and phones and tablets would be out as well. At the moment I've only got some test demos anyway, but it kind of feels like we'll have to plan on having two separate versions of the same movies and TV, doesn't it? Or do you plan on holding out entirely on HDR until all of your devices support it?

jhoff80 94 Posted June 6, 2017 Author Posted June 6, 2017 The only software currently capable of converting from HDR to SDR is madVR, which is at the rendering stage. Plus, the algorithms need to vary based on every screen's brightness to be most accurate.
jhoff80 94 Posted January 2, 2018 Author Posted January 2, 2018 Looks like in the long run, ffmpeg will eventually get some sort of tone mapping support to hopefully make this moot: https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html#tonemap https://ffmpeg.org/pipermail/ffmpeg-devel/2017-July/213741.html
