Is there a Genre limit?

Hi

I have noticed that on my system running server version 3.0.5135.31685 on a Windows 7 PC that a film with more than three genres only the first three are used.

E.g. a film with four genres the fourth genre is not shown in the metadata and does not appear when viewing movies by genre.

Attached is a screenshot of the movie.xml film for the genre section with four entries.

Also Attached is a screenshot of the Server dashboard edit metadata view - only the first three genre are shown.

In the dashboard the film is not listed under the fourth Genre: "war" in this example. The same occurs when viewing genre on the Media Browser Classic client (Chocolate theme).

Is there a genre limit or is there something wrong with the movie xml file? (I am unable to attach the movie xml file).

Many thanks

Any suggestions why the fourth genre is being ignored in my example? I noticed that the war genre had very little in it so looked for some films that I expected to be in the war genre. The XML file for the movie looks OK but the movie does not appear when viewing the genre category.

Edit > just checked some more movies, those with four or five genres only the first three are being used in the view by genre.

Do you have the Genre Cleaner plug-in installed?

Testing with the same version of MBS, I can't reproduce the problem.  Added genres through the interface and through a text editor with no issues.  Movies are showing up in all 5 genres I'm working with.

Hi - no I haven't got the genre plug-in installed. No server plugins at all installed.

Good day.

After you save the edit for adding more genres for the titles you testing, did you run library scan?

Hi

Yes, I did run a scan on the server. It is a consistent issue. Another example this time for Avatar:

Four Genre, Four Studios in XML File:

Only first three Genre appear in dashboard but all four studios are shown:

Film Avatar is not displayed in the Sci-Fi genre when browsing by genre.

Any further ideas what to try to fix this please? I can force the server to totally rebuild the genres?

Good day,

Luke, I can confirm the issue here, here my test:

I add forth genre to a title, then went to metadata setting, and disable genre off, then save and refresh, still at webclient it display 3 genres only.

Good to hear that the cause of the issue is understood. Many thanks for looking into this.

it doesn't repro on the dev build so there isn't much for me to look into

works for me. i tried both using the editor, and adding directly to xml. worked in both cases.

Good day,

I mark the thread back to unsolved since Luke still can not find the issue, but to me at least, it a bug :)

Only if you do not click "refresh", refresh will wipe that. Even if the metadata settings luck the genres option, as I set it up to the "Off".

with the new refresh option in the dev build, "add missing data only", it will not wipe it. in the release build you edit the xml and then wait for the library scan to pick up the change.

So the issue here not the limit matters as this thread about, it simply refresh issue that wiped the genres setting no matters what.

The issue that why then when the option off at metadata setting lock the genres, and the wipe still happens.

bug maybe? I can't reproduce that either. not in the dev build at least.

Sound like it buddy, but better I do more test.

I thought I was dreaming about one issue:

When I do it from the movies tab on the edit title, it work without problem.

But when I go to the "media folder - to my Movies collection" it failed.

I will do more test shortly and give a reply.

That is great news, is that a new dev build? Nothing showing up yet at my end and I have set to beta build.

well it's great news except there weren't actually any changes :)

Yes, regarding the fix issue.

The issue was here that when you add a custom genre to a title and save, then do this:

When you click save, then any time you run library scan, it will keep your custom genres.

Well buddy, now library scan will apply the rule you did at "metadata settings" :)
