I'm sure everyone has heard by this point that Emby's main competitor as added Live TV support as it is being reported on several major tech news sites and filling up aggregated news feeds. You'd swear they invented the very idea of Live TV by reading some of the articles as if there was no options before they released theirs. I research and view a lot of home theater related information on the internet and the only news articles that show up in my aggregated news feeds like Google News are either what I assume is a paid advertisement for Emby's main competitor or a clickbait article about Kodi being banned. I guess I am just bitter about seeing all these articles when there is and has been a better alternative for a very long time that many will never know about because Emby isn't paying the big bucks to have it covered by tech news sites. Just for comparison sake, The Verge has 199 articles related to Emby's main competitor compared to 0 for Emby.

End Rant

Amen, brother.  Well said.

[competitor name] fanboys make me want to shove a thumb tack in my ears.

[competitor name] is the reason I started using XBMC 13 years ago.  Never looked back until I was researching how to deal w/ the MySQL sync issues of multiple clients w/ disparate versions running.... found Emby, then never looked back.

Money talks.  The days of the 'news' somehow being an unbiased entity are long gone.  It's pay to play!

It is kind of depressing, though the other day did see an article or two in Windows Central about how to set up Live TV in Emby.

It's too funny that you started this thread. I was thinking earlier today how every time there is some update or new feature added to that competitor's software it's all I can see on my Twitter feed and news threads (via Google). You're right, you would think they invented some major service that no one has ever done before.

It reminds me of when their DVR service came out and all of their ads about it were written as if it was the best DVR service every released. The crazy thing is that it was in Beta stage and had tons of bugs. I admit, I did try it but they were so far behind in features compared to Emby, NextPVR and SiliconDust that it was laughable. They even billed it as "The King of DVRs".

Their advertising and marketing department is what is way beyond other services of a comparable nature, not the actual product.

So, you're not the only one that had some stuff to rant about on this one! lol

I cringe when I see all the chest thumping about it.  I just watched a YouTube video about it, and how they are able to stream live TV any where in the world.  Emby has been doing that for a long time, at least as long as I am aware of.

Most online news, whatever the subject area, is mostly useless nowadays in my opinion.  The clickbait model ruined whatever little honesty and objectivity there was.

Real journalism is still out there, but to find it you have to wade through a sea of articles that are little more than puff pieces or direct reprints from other sources that may or may not preserve the by-line.  If you want to see something worse than tech news, look at what passes for journalism in the gaming world....

I agree about the clickbait model, though, and how pervasive it is now.  Sensational headlines are the norm, and some don't even resemble the content of the article - they're just there to generate clicks and views (read: ad revenue and statistics).  I don't envy editors' jobs, since there's too much info out there now about every subject imaginable and you need to get people to open your page rather than a competitor's, but it's gotten ridiculous.  I'd prefer solid reporting with (shockingly) some fact- and spell-checking over turning headline creation into a creative writing exercise.  I also wish they'd only publish an article when there's something new and interesting to say rather than regurgitating a press release or rewording an article released an hour before and adorning it with a different headline (new and improved!  :P ).

News inherently has to be "newsworthy."

I love Emby.  Obviously, there are reasons that I chose it over Plex after evaluating both platforms.  I actually used Plex for a LONG time before switching.

I'm going to venture that the user base for Plex is orders of magnitude greater than that of Emby which is what makes it newsworthy.

All we can do is get the word about Emby out there. Whenever I respond to an article or story talking about Plex, I try to bring up Emby as an alternative.

I will say this... Having used both platforms extensively on the free tier... unfortunately, I think that the way Plex handles free (or specifically paid app) users is better than what Emby is doing.  I think it could be costing Emby some users and publicity.  But that is just guessing on my part.

Can you please expand on this with specifics?  Thanks.

Of course.

As I said, I used the free tier of Plex for the past couple years and then more recently checked out Emby before ultimately making the switch.

I did not rely on Plex's or Emby's solutions to automate a connection to my server.  I prefer to do everything manually.  I have my own domain and forward everything myself for remote access.

So on both Plex and Emby I bought the stand alone apps to access my own server content on Android (and Android TV).

With Plex, that was all there was to it.  The paid app was able to access my server and play my content without limitation.  Locally, on other computers, I was able to use the web interface to watch the content.  With Emby, there were still limitations as I recall, with prompts to purchase premier.  I know this is still true of the web app, but I'm not sure about the Android TV one.

The difference with me is that I had already decided to purchase one platform or the other to take advantage of Live TV and DVR.  One of the main reasons that Emby won out, and why it's relative to this discussion, was that you already had Live TV support AND supported my older HDHomerun hardware which meant I could save more because I didn't need new hardware.

I think there is a class of user that will never pay, or will pay for just an app (like I did).  That specifically is what I feel that Plex did better.  There were no prompts for me to buy more as long as I was using the "free" subset of features.  Because of that, had it not been for being ahead on Live TV at the time, I don't think I would have made the switch.

That being said... I'm glad I did.

Not a bad review either.

I agree, would say it is very accurate and compares the two options well.

Sweet!

There is an unfortunate typo in his review, though where he states guide data is $25 per month.

Also, he makes a blanket statement about not being able to "pick up where you left off watching something" which is only true for in-progress recordings.

Noticed that too.  Maybe send the dude a PM to correct it.

I think this can be easily missed as some clients there is no resume and you have to select play before your presented with "do you want to resume or play from beginning" option
