Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Lately I've been hearing my cooling fans doing double duty on my HTPC so i checked resource monitor and found that Emby Server has a high CPU Utilization. What gives? Do you need anything else from me? TIA Emby Server Log.txt
Luke 42078 Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Hi, please try removing all plugins except for backup, Google drive, and trailers. Thanks.
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 I did that. CPU usage dropped to about 25%. I re-installed my plugins and it is back at 75%. I supposed the next thing to do would be to uninstall them again and then install them one at a time to see which one spikes CPU usage? Any educated guesses as to which one it might be? Also, this HTPC runs 6 (not all at once but maybe 3 at a time sometimes) extenders (5 ceton echos and one xBox 360) so I need a bit of reserve on the CPU. This could explain why my extenders have started disconnecting when not in use, so Windows can reserve resources for Emby Server even though nothing is using the server for playback.
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 During the time I typed the last comment utilization dropped to under 50%.
legallink 187 Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 @@Sammy that still sounds very high. I don't know what your hardware is, but while Emby server is just running (some tasks obviously make the machine take more, but it idle's at 2 - 5% utilization and Emby is at 0%. Are you doing some conversions? creating roku thumbnails? something that requires a lot of cpu time? And yes, I would totally install the plugins one at a time to see what causes the spike.

It is a Haswell Devil's Canyon 4690k i5 on a Gigabyte Z97 Gaming MoBo with 12Gb low latency DDR3, HD7850 GPU and a 250Gb Samsung PRO 850 SSD. It is no slacker. I don't think there's any processes running on Emby Server, nothing is being converted for upload to a client and I don't use Roku Thumbs but that sounds like a nice plugin to check out after this is resolved. ebr 16181 Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 TuneIn and Vimeo are both throwing errors. You also have IPTV and LIve TV plug-ins that, depending on configuration and exactly what is being accessed, have the potential for slow downs.
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 (edited) TuneIn and Vimeo are both throwing errors. You also have IPTV and LIve TV plug-ins that, depending on configuration and exactly what is being accessed, have the potential for slow downs. After uninstalling all my plugins I didn't see Vimeo those in the catalog to re-install even so it's they're not there. I didn't re-install TuneIn because I saw the errors it was throwing in the log. I use IPTV occasionally but Live TV through ServerWMC all the time. If nothing is being played in Live TV will the utilization still spike? Edited May 26, 2017 by Sammy
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 I did see those errors but figured they'd go away after uninstalling them. Here's a current log. BTW, I do see a LOT of activity in the log from LiveTV but if WMC can handle this with low utilization is there a way to make it more efficient in Emby? Thanks. Emby Log.txt
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 In the Resource Monitor, there's a lot of Associated Handles and Associated Modules with Mediabrowser Server. Is there a way to get this full list to share it? Is this list even helpful in resolving this?
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 (edited) Currently I have none of the OC settings set on my MoBo. Will that help lower utilization (but cause more heat)? Edited May 26, 2017 by Sammy
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 Okay. I uninstalled Google Drive Plugin as I don't log into google drive on any of my PC's anymore due to the fact that Google Drive puts a copy of everything on every device which sort of defeats the purpose of having a cloud drive in the first place. CPU utilization dropped to about 25% but that still seems i bit high IMO. Manageable but high nonetheless.
Luke 42078 Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Have you uninstalled all of them except for backup, Google drive, and trailers?
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 Have you uninstalled all of them except for backup, Google drive, and trailers? I did. Utilization dropped to 25% which is still a little elevated. I added them back in and it went to 50%. Taking out Google Drive as I don't use it it dropped back to 25% but now it is at 70%.
Luke 42078 Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Ok, I would try the steps in post #2 again. Thanks.
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 (edited) Okay. I started doing that and after uninstalling Auto Box Sets the Server crashed and I got this error. I reloaded the server and utilization is still at 25% but I'm still removing the plugins. Edited May 26, 2017 by Sammy
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 All plugins but Server Configuration Backup and Trailers are removed. Google Drive was removed as I don't use Google Drive on this HTPC anyhow so it seemed to be a useless plugin to have installed. CPU Utilization is now at 0% but I do not have much functionality in Emby right now.
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 And it is back at 50% Utilization. No plugins installed so to speak and ET isn't working either right now. Do you need more logs? Something doesn't seem right. The utilization went back up after trying to launch ET as being discussed in the other thread. Maybe these two issues are related.?
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 So, even though I launched ET it wasn't visible. It showed up in Task Manager. I killed the process and CUP utilization immediately went from 70% to 50%, nearly all of that is MediaBrowserServer.
Luke 42078 Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 There is activity in this log. Some cpu usage is going to happen. Are you expecting 0? You uninstalled the live tv plugin as requested, and the server is cleaning up database entries that were associated with that. Meanwhile, there is a transcoding session happening at the exact same time. Please try this - keep things as they are. Restart the server, ensure that no scheduled tasks are running, and then ensure there is no playback related transcoding happening. Then look at your CPU usage. Then once you're satisfied, then you can allow these activities again up to the level that you're able to tolerate.
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 (edited) Okay. I did that. I skipped IPTV and PlayOn and am still at around 25%. This just seems high on this system but I guess I'll just need to learn to live with it. That said, I run a Blue Iris security camera server on my other PC which has the same CPU but no GPU and a basic MoBo. This system is transcoding video and it writing to disc 24 hours a day and usually never gets above 25% unless it is downloading content for playback. This Emby Server isn't doing any of that and is really chewing through the CPU cycles. Edited May 26, 2017 by Sammy
Luke 42078 Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 25% where? Remember, in your log you had both transcoding + a scheduled task in the background. When the server is truly idle it should sit at 0%.
Sammy 790 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 Emby Server / Media Browser Server is at around 25% utilization. It is probably because I just re-installed all these plugins and they were doing whatever it is that they do to process metadata when they are installed. I'll check again later after things have settled a bit.
Sammy 790 Posted May 31, 2017 Author Posted May 31, 2017 @@Luke As part of the 3.2.18.0 update Change Log it says the following on Github: "Reduce resource consumption of realtime monitor". Will this help lower my CPU usage?
