Guest worthington_j Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 After I watch I movie (In Kodi or sync'd offline to my phone from Emby) I manually update the watched status in the movies .nfo file with a 3rd party tool. I do this because the information stays with the movie and not stored in a database that may get blown away at some point. I'm still a Kodi user and haven't fully committed to Emby at this point. Up until about a month ago I could mark a movies nfo as watched and when Emby would re-scan the library it would pull in that info and mark the movie as watched in Emby. I am no longer seeing this happen. Even if I manually refresh a movie that has the nfo marked as watched the movie continues to display as unwatched in Emby. I don't recall any setting changes, just server updates over the last month.
Luke 42079 Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 Unfortunately we had to turn this into a watch status saving function instead of a syncing function, so we no longer read it from nfo. Why? Because too many users turn it on, then end up losing watch data when some other program modifies the nfo but wipes out the watch data. Unfortunately we're the ones who end up getting stuck with the brunt of the troubleshooting because they assume something is wrong with Emby and then come to us looking for explanation and assistance. That being said, we're open to allowing it again via hidden config switch.
Guest worthington_j Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 I understand the reasoning for turning off the feature, I deal with similar situations. If this could be a hidden feature that would be awesome for me. I'm still managing a Kodi and Emby DB until I can settle on a single solution. I also like to testing new things and playing around so me having this information in the .nfo saves me a lot of headaches if I ever need to wipe out a DB and start over.
Guest worthington_j Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 Luke - If you make this a hidden config please provide me the info and I'll be happy to test the results.
Pelon 203 Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 I would add an option when adding a path to a library, to at least initially read the watched status from the NFO file. Let's say that you are rebuilding your server or migration to another computer. If for any reason you don't have a backup of the server configuration, this would at least allow to get the watched status again.
Happy2Play 9781 Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Doesn't this only affect a one user environment as info for only one user is/was saved to nfo? So this is still useless for a multi user environment correct?

PeteyW 0 Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 (edited) Hello, I'm in the process of migrating to Emby from a central Kodi MySQL database; NFOs contain Watched, PlayCount, Resume point, etc. I, too, would like Emby to pickup the Watched status (at least). Please advise if any of these options are available: * a (hidden) flag, mentioned above * config file(s) that may be amended * installation of an old version; populate Emby database; update to current. [i believe v3.2.12.0 was the last to read 'Watched' from NFOs] * any other suggestions? Cheers, Pete Edited June 17, 2017 by PeteyW
Luke 42079 Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 It's not yet available via hidden config switch. I suppose in theory it is possible to accomplish this with an older version.
Guest worthington_j Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 (edited) What was the last version that had this feature? I think I'm going to downgrade. Sorry, I see the version in the previous post. Edited June 21, 2017 by worthington_j
Guest worthington_j Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 I downgraded my windows server to 3.2.12 by replacing the system folder with the one from https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/releases/tag/3.2.12. After running a scan on the media library the watched status is not updating. Are there any other files that need to be downgraded?
Luke 42079 Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 Try adding new media. The server will only re-scan nfo's on new media or when existing ones change. Also please be aware that there have been database changes along the way from that version to the current one. Newer versions of the server have made changes that the old version won't be able to understand. Hopefully it will all work out.
Guest worthington_j Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 I wasn't able to stay on the old version very long before I needed to upgrade. Do we know if and when a hidden config switch for importing the NFO watched status might occur?
tipex 2 Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 Hi, any news about "hidden config switch"? I need to set up emby server on new hardware and I have more than 1500 movies ... I don't want to loose play count, watch status etc. Is there another possibility without downgrading?

You can use the Server Configuration Backup plugin to backup the complete user data status of all your media though and then restore it to the new installation. This will be much better than trying to use nfo files because it will maintain play count, resume position, watched status, favorites, etc. for every individual user.
