Hi guys, just thought I would ask what is considered "normal" for the emby library size. It seems that over time my library has gotten bigger, but this might be totally normal and expected.

I am talking about the Emby install directory, not the videos themselves.

Right now my Emby folder is over 5GB

 - about 150 movies

 - 10 shows with maybe 500 total TV episodes

 - live TV enabled with 100 channels

Is this normal?

Tough to say what "normal" is. Someone archiving Bluray remuxes is likely to be using a lot more storage then someone with a few DVD rips. I personally have 2022 movies, 230 TV shows, 6301 Episodes, 732 Albums, and 11932 songs. I never delete anything. Total amount of storage used is 23.3 TB. If all my movies were Bluray remuxes the amount of space needed would likely triple. I wouldn't doubt if there are Emby users with libraries in excess of 100TB.

I think farside847 means the Emby Server install size, not actual media size. I'm not near my server so can't check.

I'm in the 7TB range,  200ish movies, but I delete tv episodes  after I watch them (unless they're shows which have ended that I still might watch again) and use Google music.  Of everyone that actively participates on this forum, the average library size is probably somewhere around 20TB if I had to guess.

edit:  After reading @@Latchmor's comment and reading the OP, I think he's correct.

Ah yes you appear to be correct. I save everything into the media folders so that likely reduced my Emby library size a fair amount. My Emby install directory is 2.8GB.

Sorry if I was not clear. I was asking about the size of the Emby library files (meta data, images, etc) not the videos themselves.

Yes, I save meta to the folder too. Hmmmmmm. You have alot more movies than I do, and have a much smaller Emby directory. This is what I was worried about.

Are there good ways to fix this? I am guessing its adding a lot of overhead.

I have just done a fresh install of Emby server so that may be the reason for the small size. I have scanned and added my entire library but maybe it will continue to grow over time...

I have circa 450 movies and 31 television series, so I have a smaller library compared to some people I know (one guy I've dealt with has over 10k DVDs alone, and his BR count is similar without many "double-dip" titles; no idea what his UHD count is).  I never looked at the television show episode count and most are miniseries...I'm not a big television fan, so that side of my collection grows at a glacial pace.  My main media storage that Emby is pointed at is around 4TB currently (all re-encoded h.264 with lossless audio when available).  I also keep a few disc-sourced remuxes and a few different arrangements of my 3D features on separate storage (~1TB worth), along with about 500GB of various shorts and encoding test clips, but I don't include those in my Emby library since I use them more for testing than viewing.

Like others, I save metadata with the media, so my install directory is only about 2.5GB.  Interestingly, that's mostly people metadata - having been uncredited crew (or an extra) a few times and knowing some folks in the industry, I pay more attention to crew credits than most people do.  Most metadata providers rely on community contributions, which tend to be focused more on actors than who the grips or sound editors are, so I do quite a bit of "people curating" over and above what Emby fetches.

Yes that size is normal and can be a lot larger depending on where you save stuff.  If you don't save metadata with media then all the those images get saved into the \metadata folder.  You have to figure all the People images in the metadata folder also (my small server has a 19GB People folder alone).  And the Cache folder for all you media also.

Also remember all transcoding files temporarily go to the default location also that needs additional space.

The good thing is you can relocate Cache, Transcoding Temp and Metadata to custom locations if space becomes a issue.
