Erik 124 Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 Going to install security camera system on my house. Looking for some advise/experience from anyone with suggestions on brands/types/recording devices... Thanks!
Swynol 375 Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 i currently use Blue Iris software installed on a windows PC. i3 3xxx with 8GB RAM runs 6-8 cameras easily at 1080p/30 frames The cameras i use are Hikvision 2142 they are 4mp domes. i have 3 of these and then some cheap 1080p cameras from ebay. If i was going to buy again i would get bullet cameras as the night vision on the domes are rubbish.
chef 3810 Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 (edited) I'm so glad you brought this up because I have been waiting to tell someone about some really cool home security cctv applications I have written. I pipe the http camera stream into a home brew application which uses EmguCV libraraies (Neural Network) to Monitor for movement. Then it looks for a human face. If a face is found it sends the image to Microsofts Cognitive Sense API (another neural network) and figures the persons age and gender. I then ask My Amazon Echo (Alexa) "who is at the front door?" And it will respond with "There are currently {number of people} at your door. Male: age 35, Female: age 35". Just for example. I'm not paranoid, I just want to see if it could be done lol!... It can... I then applied for a Facebook dev account key. If someone steals the licence plates off my Carr again, I am almost able to run face recognition against every public Facebook account in central Ontario and see if there is a match on faces. If the account belongs to someone old enough to steal from me... Lol (or I get their approx age from my Neural Network, that narrows down the search even more...lol). I might not actually do that, but it would be cool to try it and see how long the Neural Network takes to find matches. Either way the application will save images from around my car if faces are found, and package them up to send to the cops if my car is broken into...again.... I use ICAMI (cheap) IP cams from Amazon. And Vera Lite to monitor the stream over the Internet. $hit is bada$$! I feel kind sorry for the next person to mess with my stuff... Ya know?...lol ICAMI comes with a pretty sweet free application to save recordings to a NAS or your computer. Oh and they have night vision. Cool dude! Edited May 30, 2017 by chef 5
JeremyFr79 228 Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 I'll second the Hikvision cameras, dont get caught up in buying "grey market" cameras from Hong Kong, you'll get screwed in the end when it comes to firmware updates, buy from a reputable US supplier and you'll be fine. B&H photo sells most of their stuff for very reasonable prices. My old system had 8 Hikvision 3mp cameras, my current setup is only 3, I used to have a hardware NVR, now just run a VM with their PCNVR software and write to a 1TB iSCSI volume. Works like a charm without the need for another piece of hardware.

I'm sure you could market that.
