So I've been on one of the new releases 3.2.15.0 for about 2 weeks now. There are some nice improvements over the older builds, but I'm still having some issues. The one that is always a problem for me, is the time it takes to load new pages (home page, a library page, upcoming, etc), sometimes it can take 20+ seconds just to load a page. Other times it's instant. This one seems to cause problems for several users but the source is seemingly unknown so I don't expect any help for that one.

However, worse than that, I am experiencing a problem that prevents playback of any video files - from a specific browser instance. This happened to me last week and I had to clear my cookies and browsing data in order to get playback to resume normally. During this period, I can login using the same account on a different browser or using incognito mode, and there are no playback issues at all. Furthermore, if I logout of my account and switch to a different account while using the same browser instance, I cannot start any playback. So this is not specific to one account. Additionally, I tried restarting the Emby Server instance, and this did not resolve the issue.

I press play on any media, and the spinner will usually show up for about 1 second and then disappear. No playback starts, and nothing else occurs. Same thing if I try using the play button again. I have attached my log so you can take a look at it. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

Hi, please try updating to 3.2.17. There was an issue resolved for mobile chrome. thanks.

Not using mobile chrome, and I do not wish to update "in hopes" that the issue is resolved. I would like to determine what the issue is and know that it has been resolved. An update for mobile chrome should have absolutely no impact on this situation considering mobile chrome isn't being used in this circumstance, correct?

You didn't state the browser so that was all the info I had to go on. I would suggest updating to the latest version. Anytime we release new versions quickly after a previous one, it is going to just be bug fixes.

It doesn't say what browser I'm using in the logs? I really would prefer to not update, also this is really not a helpful solution: "Update, then wait till it happens again...or it doesn't". Not exactly the best way to resolve an issue...

Yes the info is in the log but it makes things easier if you just state that up front. Often times a log file will have log entries from multiple apps at once, so it just helps save us a little time. Well you could also try resetting your browser to a clean slate, e.g. clearing browsing data, uninstalling add-ons, etc.

Doesn't this tell you something with the browser is the issue?

So what is the issue? And how can it be resolved?

It sounds like something environmental as happy2play is suggesting. I would try the things that have been suggested here. Thanks.

You suggestion was, "we don't know what the issue is, and I don't want to look into it too much, so try updating and hope that some change we made in the past 2 builds randomly fixes this issue", correct? Okay, yeah, that sounds promising.

I mean, I guess I have no choice but to upgrade to the latest stable and hope that the issue occurs again before you update stable again (because if it occurs after you update stable, I imagine I will just be asked to update to the latest stable again) or hope that it doesn't occur altogether. This is really silly though, lol.

Since you say Incognito mode works there is a addon or config in your browser causing problems.  As Luke mentioned you may have to reset your browser to a default state.

Interesting. This seems like a sensible response and illuminates some light on the problem. So I could try disabling my extensions in Chrome to see if I can get playback to work, I will do this now. Also, technically none of my users have reported this issue to me, so it could be occurring only for me due to some weird Chrome extension. I will report back after disabling extensions, thanks for the advice.

I just disabled all extensions and restarted Chrome, but the issue persists. There is nothing in the logs that stands out? When I attempt playback from a different browser, I notice a lot more requests pop up when I press the play button. But when the playback doesn't work, I only see 6 new lines pop up. When I try to play a trailer and playback fails I get the following:

GET /LocalTrailers

RESPONSE /LocalTrailers

GET /Intros

RESPONSE /Intros

GET /SecurityInfo

RESPONSE /SecurityInfo

When I play a trailer and playback works I get the following:

GET /LocalTrailers

RESPONSE /LocalTrailers

GET /Intros

RESPONSE /Intros

POST /PlaybackInfo

etc.

lol, so I bit the bullet and updated to 3.2.17.0. For some reason, when I manually updated the Server thought it would be a good idea to also re-enable Automatic Server Updates, which I had previously disabled. What the hell?

This caused it to update the Statistics plugin I had installed, which then forced me to restart Emby Server again, which is now hanging during the restart process and I see this in the logs:

Posted

That's not really much of a problem. it is something that was abruptly terminated due to the shutdown.

Posted

It's not a problem, but the Emby process is hanging and won't restart after the Restart was requested? And it's just sitting as a process in my task manager for more than 10 minutes doing nothing. And I can't access the web interface at all during this time.

In what way is this not a problem?

Posted (edited)

Going on 20 minutes that the server process is still hanging and unavailable/unresponsive. This is normal/not a problem?

edit: 40 minutes. I guess I will have to restart my server...

Hopefully we can figure out what causes this horrible problem. I can provide the entire log if you need.

After using a workaround (restarting my server) I am now able to run 3.2.17.0  and playback has resumed for me as normal. Will report back if it happens again.

Please look out for those other bugs that were mentioned, especially the one that causes Emby to be completely unresponsive and not end/restart the process, but even the one that causes the user's Automatic Updates preferences to be changed without user intervention.

As far as the unresponsive issue goes, I see you are running some community plugins. Try removing those and see if the issue persists. Thanks.
