so iOS is getting the 192 kHz audio stream from the Plex Media Server and forward this to the headless device, in case my Nvidia Shield Pro? I understand iOS doesn't have ExoPlayer, but AVPlayer which is similar to ExoPlayer in Android.

The device isn’t involved. It just gives cast an instruction to play something from the server.

This is clear.

We may conclude then:

  • Plex Media Server is providing the original audio stream (in my case the 192 kHz etc) to its clients;
  • Without using an app at the target media box (in my case a Shield Pro), it's able to play HiRes audio;
  • It's the app at the target (Plex, as PlexAmp doesn't exist on AndroidTV) causing the problem as it is not playing correctly.

It's less likely that the OS (AndroidTV) with its libraries are converting the audio stream back to 48 kHz as without the app it's working fine and I suppose it is using its OS to perform a cast. Also, Kodi is capable of playing HiRes audio (but maybe skipping the libraries from AndroidTV).

If this is correct I believe we should ask the developers of the Plex client if this is correct and if there is a chance they will improve it in the near future.

Hi, with Chromecast, Emby will also send it directly.
