Chase play freeze-up: unable to determine items to play

This happens in both Windows web browser (Chrome) and Roku Beta:  An active recording can not be reached and it locks up the player.  The metadata shows up in the Recordings folder, but when you go in there is no video identified, and hitting "Play All" gets an infinite spinning circle.  In Roku it says "unable to determine items to play" while the web browser says nothing.  Curiously, while the Back button on the browser restores normal function, in Roku the Back button does indeed work but the spinning circle persists - I was able to send a logfile for my server Matrix.

I know I have chase-played on Roku in the past.  How long does it take before the video is available for viewing?  Note that I replicated this both with MP4 and TS files.

OK I think I found how I was able to chase-play before:  In the web browser, under the Live TV section, under the "Recordings" menu.  I have attached a screenshot.  I am not in front of my Roku, but I don't think there is the same option.

The problem (or confusion) occurs in the "Recordings" section that is auto-created by Emby when you identify a folder to save your recordings.  Here you are unable to access the video file until it is done recording -- but the confusion comes because the metadata is created, and becomes visible in Emby, but the video file is not yet available to the viewer - per my second screenshot.

So I am going to personally rename my "Recordings" folder to "Finished Recordings" but wondering what the options are here.  It is very confusing to the end-user to have a PLAY ALL button that doesn't play anything, and makes one think Emby is broken.  At the very least this button should be grayed out if the video is not yet available, but ideally it would allow access to chase-play the video while recording.

Those items should show up as "Active Recordings" not in the normal library.

Are you using a beta server?

Yes - I am running 3.2.13.9 beta.

I do see Active Recordings under the LIVE TV section,  and am able to chase-play the video there.  I guess my point is the metadata pops up prematurely in the Recordings library, before the video is available, and gives you the option to PLAY something that is not yet there.

As a follow-up to this thought, it would be great to have the Active Recordings option in the Roku app! :)

What is the output format that you've selected for recording? I see this with mp4 selected. It's a known issue for right now. With mkv selected, or with conversion disabled, i have no problem playing the in-progress recording.

I'm sorry @@Luke I am not explaining the situation clearly.

  • If I use the web browser, go into Live TV, and select an "Active Recordings" video in the Recordings screen it works fine, whether TS or MP4
  • --> there is not this option in the Roku app, would be nice to have! (I can post this in the Roku forum)
  • If I go into the Recordings folder while a video is still recording, there is an option to Play All but no video to play - this behavior shows up when I click Play All
  • --> this manifests when the active recording is the FIRST recording for that show (i.e. nothing else for Emby to play in that show's folder)

This is primarily a confusion thing:  The show's metadata is created in the Recordings library before the video is available, and gives you the option to PLAY something that is not yet there.

Ok, I understand now. Thanks for the feedback.
