Several Issues with Movie Playback

First a little background...I have a HMPC that's connected to a Sony HDTV.  Motherboard and CPU are up to date and pretty powerful.  I have 16Gbs of RAM and am running Windows 10 Professional.  I use DVDFab v.10 to rip all my DVDs (1:1 rip).  DVDFab rips into two different folders: AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS.  The Audio folder is completely empty.  The Video folder has a bunch of files in it (i.e. VIDEO_TS, VIDEO_01_1, VIDEO_07_0.BUP, etc).  I used to use Windows Media Center (WMC) without  any issues at all with video playback. Well...Microsoft killed WMC with Windows 10 and I can't get the WMC hack to work anymore.  So I'm trying to switch to Emby.  I downloaded the Emby Server and all my movies showed up perfectly on the interface.  I've been able to watch 2 Fast, 2 Furious and Paddington Bear without any issues at all.

So a couple of crazy things happened to me last night…

1)     Last night my wife and I attempted to watch The Devil Wears Prada (a movie we've watched a bunch of times using WMC).  We were able to get about 40 minutes into it and suddenly the movie froze.  We waited several minutes but it didn’t do anything.  I attempted to move the “slider” to back up the movie. It backed up a few seconds and then played again.  Got to the same spot and froze again.  Tried once more and the same thing.  So this time I backed out of the movie, back to the main Emby server interface.  Started the movie again, hoping to just go back to the beginning and then move the slider to roughly the 40 minute mark.  Well this time it started back and even though the slider showed it being at around the 40 minute mark, the movie was showing basically the end of the movie.  Tried to reset things several times and the same thing kept happening…kept showing the end of the movie where the middle would be.  It was like the middle of the movie just disappeared.  So after trying several times we just gave up and decided to watch another movie.  This is when issue #2 popped up.

2)    We switched over to try to watch A Few Good Men (another movie we’ve successfully watched several times when using WMC).  This movie started right up, no issue at all, at the beginning and everything.  The problem was that it was playing the Directors Commentary and there was no way for me to turn that off.  We didn’t want to watch with commentary so at this point we just shut Emby down and went a different route.

3)    The third issue we’ve been dealing with (although not last night, but this weekend) is we’ll attempt to start a movie but we’ll get nothing but a black screen.  The slider doesn’t really move and if you manually move it then nothing really happens, it just stays black.  This happened this weekend when we attempted to watch Toy Story 2.  I’ve had this happen with other movies as well that I know successfully worked with WMC.

I know that the logs probably will help figure out what happened.  I’ll try to post those in  just a moment if I can figure that out.

Any help anyone could provide would be great.  I’m worried that I’ve “lost” the ability to watch the majority of my movies and am really hoping I’m not back to square one.

Thanks in advance!

Hi.  What app are you using for playback?

If you are trying to use the web interface, then there will be potential issues as no web browser will support the format of your videos (DVD folder rips) so we have to try some experimental things to play them.

To be able to properly play those types of videos, you will need to use one of the true HTPC apps like Emby Theater Desktop.

Please give us a little more info on how you were attempting playback.  Thanks!

So trying to upload the log files.  Apologies in advance that it's massive.  Had something like 25 different logs. I've tried to cut and past them into a single Word document.  I can't upload a Word document.  Any other way to upload what I've cut/pasted?

Anyways....once I get the logs uploaded it's probably only the first few and the last few that are of any interest. The rest are just me messing around with Devil Wears Prada trying to get that one to work.

A few more details that I'd forgotten until seeing the log files.  Tired Devil first and it messed up.  Also tried Dispicable Me and it never played...just a black screen.  Tried A Few Good Men and had only director's commentary, tried Crocodile Dundee.  It played for about 10 minutes and then froze and I could never get it to work after that.

Again...sorry for the massive log files...it was like 25 of them and according to the admin they want to see everything.  Hope it helps.

Thanks again for all your help!

That might be the issue...I was just using the Emby Server Web on Microsoft Edge.  For example, pulled up the Emby server using MS Edge and then just navigated to the movie and pressed play.  Wasn't using any special app or anything.   That might indeed be the issue...

Let's see if this works....

Check my post above...most of this is just me messing around with one movie.

Hope this helps though...even a little bit.

Hi @@RedeyeJK, I can see this is a folder rip. Playback of folder rips in the web app is only experimental, sorry. It won't work with all titles. For the best possible experience, we recommend converting to plain video files, or limit your playback to apps that natively support Dvd:

  • Emby for WMC
  • Emby Theater Desktop
  • Emby for Kodi

Thanks !

Ok...So I paid the $5 for Emby Premiere and then went and got Emby Theater Desktop.  Tried to watch a movie using Emby Theater.  (BTW...graphics are insanely better with Theater vice playing off the Emby server through MS Edge).

Problem I'm having now is that I can't play a movie.  Tried to put in Fast and Furious 3.  It played all the warnings and played the previews.  Then it took me to the "main" DVD screen, i.e. where you typically could select "Play Movie", "Setup", "Bonus Features", "Languages", etc.  Problem was I couldn't select anything and just sat there staring at the intro screen playing over and over.

I know I'm doing a folder rip based on the above threads and frankly how I'm ripping my DVDs...thought that going with something like Premiere and Emby Theater would fix the problems I'm having.

Thoughts?

I've attached the log that's associated with my trying to watch Fast and Furious 3.

Emby Theater has not implemented dvd menus at this point, apologies. It supports dvd folders, just not with the menus.
