VladTepz 47 Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 (edited) What's the current thinking on software like the Emby addon and EmbyCon in light of Kodi's (rumored) upcoming crackdown on non-DRM addons to block streaming addons? There is some misunderstanding going around, there was an article about Kodi allowing DRM Addons to be implemented via the new input stream addons. People started reading into it as kodi implementing DRM system wide into Kodi, it was actually quite humorous. Have no fear, Kodi will remain DRM free while allowing DRM Addons (Netflix,Amazon Prime, etc) you can already run Netflix, (through a 3rd party, unofficial addon that handles DRM through the input stream addon), in Kodi 18 Agile Branch, it has not been merged into the main line yet, but should be in time for release. *Edit* here's the article causing all the rumors, though if you actually read it, it's pretty clear... https://torrentfreak.com/kodi-wants-to-beat-piracy-with-legal-content-and-drm-170409/ Edited April 19, 2017 by VladTepz
Luke 42078 Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 They (Kodi Team) will never win over the rights-holders and they will never win against the shady addon fully loaded box guys. They are fighting a losing battle on both fronts, they are fucked. They should just concentrate on producing a kick ass cross platform media player with excellent addon support. What people do with this the tool it not their responsibility. At the mend of the day it is just a media player like all the dozens of others out there, there is not recourse for right holders on media players. It might not be their responsibility, but if you're an app store like Amazon, it is much easier to just ban Kodi than it is to go after the individuals, and that's exactly what they did. You can argue right or wrong about that, but if you're Kodi, you don't want that to happen with other app stores so you have to do something about it.
VladTepz 47 Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 I've read all the articles, again they are taking about adding low levels DRM for Addon authors to use to be able to bring in more legal content that need DRM. (Netflix,Amazon,Etc..) They are not bringing in system wide DRM...I really don't see how that's confusing people. They are not stopping 3rd party streaming addons, they are adding a way for more legal Addons to be implemented. I'll just grab my popcorn, sit back and watch everyone think the sky is falling as a gently chuckle to myself over the misinformed.
VladTepz 47 Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 They are adding the capability of low level DRM, they are not forcing DRM. Exactly... P.S. Somebody should probably split this thread as Kodi DRM has nothing to do with EmbyCon.
VladTepz 47 Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 From the Kodi team, if there is still any confusion... Let's try again and make this crystal clear: Kodi is a free, open-source neutral software. Kodi will never, ever require DRM to work, nor will it ever be a locked software. Ever! Read that a couple more times for good measure. And while we're at it, Kodi is not a piracy platform. It enables piracy the same way Firefox and Chrome do. https://kodi.tv/article/kodi-and-drm
