pd veeps 2 Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Guys, I have my htpc/server built into a silverstone ml03 matx case, Biostar ta75m+ mobo, amd a6-3500, and two 2gb sticks of gskill ripjaw x series ram. The cpu gets hot once in a while, above 60c, so I think it's time to get an aftermarket cooler. It's usually when streaming to my roku, tablet, or iphone when the cpu gets worked pretty hard transcoding and heats up. I might even overclock it in the future if I can keep the heat down. I already have 2 case fans but it's not enough. My main concern is cpu temp. What do you guys recommend for a cpu cooler?
Tikuf 663 Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 FWIW. I use a corsair h80i (if you can fit one in your case) Current ambient temp here is 35 deg Cel. My cpu is @90% and has been for an hour or so (testing some new transcode settings) my cpu temp is sitting @ 48 deg cel. Not bad considering it is getting flogged. http://www.corsair.com/us/cpu-cooling-kits/hydro-series-water-cooling-cpu-cooler.html
christoph86 12 Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 I have that case and I put this in it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835705069 It does well. My htpc rarely is fully taxed so I have it on fan level 3 for quietness and it stays under 40. It is big but made for smaller cases. Covers a wide area including ram to keep the board cool. It is a little painful to install as I had to take the motherboard out to insert the screws from underneath.
gcw07 347 Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 I also have a Corsair H80i. I would definitely recommend one of those if your case can handle it. On my previous computer I also had another in the Hydro series, the H50.
Sharmy 9 Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Thermalright is my cooler of choice. This one is silent and suits ITX/HTPC applications. http://www.thermalright.com/html/products/cpu_cooler/axp-100.html
pd veeps 2 Posted February 13, 2014 Author Posted February 13, 2014 So I was between the thermalright axp100 and the Scythe SCBSK-2100 BIG Shuriken 2 Rev. B. I I ended up ordering the scythe as it was $20 cheaper and I read many good reviews and test results about it. It's supposed to be here on Saturday. I wish I bought an aftermarket cooler to start because now I have to rip apart my system. Oh well. You live and learn.
pd veeps 2 Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) Here is my scythe big shuriken 2. Definitely a well worth purchase. Edited March 5, 2014 by pd veeps
A8HTPC 38 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I have SilverStone NT01-Pro. Works great. CPU temps will be around 44-48*C while encoding with handbrake. I have the fans spin up early to address heat early.http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=367&area=en
