Internet streaming without transcoding

I've noticed that my server is transcoding files while I'm streaming over the net. I haven't been able to determine whether the transcoding happens regardless of what resolution is selected in the web browser (given that I only have one monitor remotely and so not being able to watch the process on the server via remote desktop while also playing a video!).

 

I have a fibre connection (well, FTTC) so upload bandwidth is resonably good (~10Mbps) so I think it should be able to stream most things. Can anyone confirm that if I choose the highest resolution in the browser it will just stream the file without transcoding?

The web browser is always going to transcode to webm because that is what a modern browser uses to play videos in HTML5. I'd suggest using an actual client like the Android or iOS one if your on a phone or tablet.

Some formats can be direct played. See the blog post about the last server release
