Crestj 68 Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 Was utterly fed up with rubbish wifi in my house even with 2 wifi routers so dived in with these! Looking very nice but not plugged them in yet. Anyone using them? Any setup / config tips I should know before I start?
CBers 7450 Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 I did look at them, but my WIFI is pretty good at home. Let us know how you get on.
BAlGaInTl 288 Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 I set up google wifi with 2x onhub units. It's sooo much better than my previous router. I bought 3 of them, but only needed to use 2 to cover my house. Very simple to set up. I lost some features from my previous router, but I've shifted them to my server.
Crestj 68 Posted April 8, 2017 Author Posted April 8, 2017 You can only get the 2 pack in the UK but that was easily big enough for my house. Setup was super easy as you'd imagine from Google. Bit of a nightmare as the subnet changes so all your IP's change. Went from 192.168.1.x to 192.168.86.x. That I expected but when you have devices that aren't easy to change IP on (security camera and wireless printer) it's a bit of a nightmare! Also, on Virgin Media, when you switch their SuperHub (ironic name!) into modem mode you get a new external IP. I've had the same external IP for years so it's going to take me a while to reconfigure things to use the new IP. The app shows you so much info about who's downloading and using all your bandwidth it's perfect in a house of 5 kids to pin point the vampire! 1 tip: set them up in complete wireless mode first then use a wired approach to connect the pucks (through various switches if you must), the performance is far better that letting the pucks communicate wirelessly. This is kind of obvious but the improvement was way more than just wireless vs wired. All in all a very impressive bit of kit.
CBers 7450 Posted April 9, 2017 Posted April 9, 2017 I've had the same external IP for years so it's going to take me a while to reconfigure things to use the new IP. DDNS is the answer in that scenario. 1
Crestj 68 Posted April 9, 2017 Author Posted April 9, 2017 Yeah had that a while ago but as my ip never changed I didn't see the need for the D in DDNS ! Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk
