The recommendations I got suggested low power, older cpu fine and 4-6gb ram.

 

Also bought a v cheap 4 Port nic which I may use in an existing unused pc for the interim while that box ships

I have a spare motherboard and CPU. I also have some 10G dual port Intel NICs, so I'll be using one of those in it, too. The 2U box will fit perfectly in my rack, and I can hook this to my KVM console. The i5 will allow me to let pfsense do some heavy lifting, and I'll use my USG for less rigorous tasks.

@ I think that's a bit over-specced for just a pfSense box, unless you're planning on running other services on it?

I'll be running the VPN service on it, too. So it needs to be able to handle the encryption. The USG doesn't have enough juice, for that.

Yes, I'm sure it packs a good punch, yet its easy on the eye too; often hard to reconcile those 2.
