mystic.bertie 23 Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 I dont really know much about a NAS but i just bought a second hand Synology DS411j NAS. At the moment my Emby server and Theatre are installed on my HTPC. My movies are direct play and output through hdmi to my Avr which receives the HD surround sound format. What is the best way to use my NAS and HTPC, should i leave the server on my HTPC or should i install it on my NAS, either way will my movies still direct play on my HTPC? Should i use network cables to improve performance? Any help on setting this up would be great.
ebr 16185 Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 If the items are direct playable now, where they reside will not impact this - as long as you properly setup access to them from the client device (proper shares, access levels and optional network paths). Then, where the server runs becomes a decision based on the capabilities and needs of the system. If all your content really direct plays, then the NAS will probably be a good place to run the server. But, if you do a lot of mobile access as well that requires transcoding, it may not. You can easily try it out and see though.

Ok thats good to know i will leave the server on my HTPC for now and once im happy with the NAS working ok then i can install the server on my NAS, i only really direct play so ill install the server on the NAS like you have advised. Will i be able to restore my setting from a server configuration backup?
ebr 16185 Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 Library setup will probably not restore very well due to the paths to the media undoubtedly being different but you should be able to get your users and watched states and such to restore once the new server is setup and everything has been identified properly.

One other thing, will it still direct play even if i connect my router to my pc with a network cable or use wifi? I have a new Samsung smart tv, it has wifi and lan port. If the server was on the NAS would it direct play if i use wifi or network cable? Is this method inferior to using my htpc to run Emby Theatre? Would i lose the HD surround sound from HD content (my tv has optical out i could feed to my AVR). Edited March 18, 2017 by mystic.bertie
