bobhays 2 Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 So I've recently been messing with tv.emby.media and really like the TV UI, even for desktop, but there are some thing I would change. 1. The desktop display mode feels lifeless compared to the tv because when you hover over a tile it doesn't pop-up like it does in the TV mode. 2. I'm not sure why we need a scroll bar in the desktop mode. The only major change that actually happens when switching between TV and desktop mode is the settings menu. Now the bugs, again just for tv.emby.media 3. When using TV display mode and scrolling left and right with a keyboard, if you scroll far enough right that it auto scrolls and moves the page for you, and then scroll all the way back to the left most tile, sometimes it won't be in the same position as when you started. This doesn't happen all the time because sometimes it shifts back perfectly, but if you keep doing it by scrolling different amounts to the right eventually it will happen. Normally this just means that there won't be a gap on the left side of the tile like there is when you first load the library, but sometimes half the tile will be off screen. 4. I don't know if this was by design or a bug, but when you select a movie, it loads all the info and artwork, including a backdrop. If you go back to the library after selecting a movie, that backdrop will stay until you select a new movie and won't go away even if you switch libraries. 5. I also don't know if this is a bug or by design, but in a movie library, the first tile that cycles through movies has some text at the bottom left. Instead of displaying the title of the movie it shows the movies tagline. This is a problem because the artwork is the movie backdrop which usually doesn't have text, and it can be hard to tell what movie is being shown, especially for movie series where the characters are the same. To fix just replace tag line with movie title. Also a reminder that Emby Theater doesn't have the ability to edit images yet. Finally, the most important suggestion/fix for this post. PLEASE let us change the default page from suggestions to whatever we want, especially just the all movies/series page. Thanks for reading this long post!
Luke 42078 Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 The desktop display mode feels lifeless compared to the tv because when you hover over a tile it doesn't pop-up like it does in the TV mode. Ultimately the desktop UI will be exactly what you see with the built in web app, it is just a matter of time to get there. We already have strong mobile and desktop layouts, so that is what the app is going to use.
Luke 42078 Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 I'm not sure why we need a scroll bar in the desktop mode. How will you scroll then? Or, more importantly, how will dummies scroll? You might be able able to figure out that you can use the mouse wheel or sometimes drag content, but that's not obvious enough for everyone.

You might be able able to figure out that you can use the mouse wheel or sometimes drag content, but that's not obvious enough for everyone. Yea I kind of just figured you can scroll with the wheel and it worked, but also you can use the keyboard. With keyboard it wont tell you which movie is currently selected but if you're going to use a mouse to select the movie that doesn't matter. I understand why you'd want to keep this though. I think it's a nice and fun way to make use of the tagline however I think I'm also reaching my breaking point of number of people thinking something is wrong, so I am just going to change it. I really do like the tagline, the only problem is that because the artwork is using the backdrop and not primary poster it makes it harder to identify. I think the best solution would be to keep the tagline but change the artwork to the poster. To do this you could flip the tile from being a large horizontal to being large vertical, and then you can stack the "all movies" "favorites" and "collections" sections next to it vertically. It would probably take the same space in the end so the rest of the formatting would be fine. I personally think this is OK, however I think I have now reached the limit of the number of people who think it's a problem so i'm just going to take it away. The backdrop looks nice but it's kind of weird when it doesn't match the movie you are looking at. I understand you cant change it for every movie selected because when scrolling through movies it would be constantly changing, but maybe if the highlighted movie doesn't change for a couple seconds, the backdrop would update to that movie. Thanks!
bobhays 2 Posted March 14, 2017 Author Posted March 14, 2017 @@Luke , I noticed a couple other small things. I can't switch away from ET when it's in full screen mode, even with atl+tab. When using "Enter" to select a video it makes a sound effect, but when using "Space" it doesn't make a sound. Also a small change I'd like to suggest. When a video is playing can we use spacebar for play/pause and enter for the highlighted action instead of both being used for highlighted action?
Luke 42078 Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Most set top boxes have sound effects these days when you press remote buttons, that's really all we're looking to emulate. As far as doing it on space, I suppose but it's not really that important. There are obviously multiple ways to select something and the sound effects are really just intended for a remote control.

I understand. Another small thing I'd like to point out, when ET is not in full screen mode, to click on one of the libraries you have to hover your mouse under the title. If you put the mouse over the actual letters it doesn't click on the button area. Sorry about all the posts, I'm just trying to help polish out all the small changes that make it feel complete.
ThetaDelta14 0 Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Hopping on to this thread since it doesn't warrant a new one and it has (somewhat) been addressed in the past. Is there any update to the status of implementing infinite scrolling (rather than the 100 movie limit)? That and the android tv server are the only things I miss about Plex. Is there any chance we will see vertical scrolling across all emby platforms, or is this dictated by the systems de facto UI? Thanks for the hard work!
Luke 42078 Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 We hope to look at infinite scrolling in the web app in the near future. What platform are you missing vertical scrolling on? 1
ThetaDelta14 0 Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Glad to hear it. And for the Nvidia Shield, but I have a feeling that might have something to do with the Android UI in general? Not too big of a deal, I just always prefer vertical scrolling for large lists. I'll be switching to a linux server and apple tv player soon anyways. Thanks
rnhbmf 0 Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 I have been liking the UI, except for not easily being able to change the Emby logo to our own. Now there is a floating tool bar at the bottom of my home screen that I have been trying to ignore. But it's bugging the crap out of me; who's idea was this? This is something Microsoft would do.... Lets put a tool bar in your face for things that are all ready on the page in front of you.. Could you please put a check box some where to turn these things on or off when they are installed? The check box on most features would probably eliminate most complaints if we could just turn off what we do not like.
Luke 42078 Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Hi, what floating bar are you referring to?
