dcook 299 Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 I am confused about Chapter Image Extraction and hope someone can clear it up? In order to have images on the chapters I need to enable the Chapter Image Extraction option for the library in question? In order to have the same for the Roku I need to install the Plugin? Are these the same thing? Is the Chapter Image Extraction used for all clients except the Roku? Does the Roku plugin require the Chapter Image Extraction? Sorry for all the questions, just looking to understand if I need to have both Chapter Image Extraction and the Roku Plugin?
ebr 16190 Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 What you see on the Roku is unique to that platform. Those are not chapter images but, rather, extracted images every few seconds used for scanning through the item at playback time. Our Chapters are different from this and are tied to either specific chapter points as defined in the video or, if there are none, basic five minute points within the video. So the plug-in/bif files are only for the Roku and not related to chapters in any way and only the Roku app will utilize them and the chapter images are our own Emby design and all apps will utilize them (including Roku in a different place). Both operations are very intensive and will take time and slow down scans on your server but the Roku/plug-in one is even more so. This is just the price you pay in order to have this type of feature and it is only a one-time cost.
dcook 299 Posted March 13, 2017 Author Posted March 13, 2017 (edited) So the Chapter Image Extraction is not required for the Roku Chapter Extraction Plugin? Also where is all the data stored? In the metadata or cache folder? And lastly is the Roku plugin required for the new Roku App? or was it meant for the old app? What you see on the Roku is unique to that platform. ebr 16190 Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 So the Chapter Image Extraction is not required for the Roku Chapter Extraction Plugin? No and the Roku plug-in is not chapters. It is just frame grabs at regular intervals (much closer than most chapters). Also where is all the data stored? In the metadata or cache folder? The Roku-specific images are stored in a single "bif" file next to your media. Our chapter images are stored in the metadata folder as defined on the server (feature request outstanding to also be able to store these next to your media). And lastly is the Roku plugin required for the new Roku App? or was it meant for the old app? It isn't required at all but it is needed if you want the special feature of images during seeking on the Roku - regardless of which version of our app.
dcook 299 Posted March 13, 2017 Author Posted March 13, 2017 Ok, sounds like I can not use the Roku Plugin until you change the plugin to have those images also stored with the rest of the metadata, as my EMBY user does not have write access to my media folders and I do not want to pollute them with other data/images anyhow. The feature request I mentioned is for the chapter images to be able to be stored with the media, not for the bif files to NOT be stored with the media. Just FYI.
Luke 42085 Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 At some point we should probably unify the two features.
