The potential for Emby and cross-platform is pretty damn exciting

Just wanna talk about how pumped I am for the future of Emby. I've been a big fan since starting up my server a little over a year ago, and it's been running my movie and tv media since then. Recently I've been playing around with other features as well.

 

Music - it's coming along really nicely, looks good, and launching a song or album from my phone onto the tv is pretty sweet. Offline support is great and much needed. It'll be a hard road to get me to dump Spotify, but things are moving towards it. More support in Emby Theatre will really bring things together.

 

Audiobooks - Again, this is coming out nicely as well. Definitely still some issues, but it works, and that's the main thing. Adding metadata manually can be a bit frustrating for some I'm sure, but I'm a tinkerer so I don't mind. Some issues include standard resume rates not translating well to the medium, marking a chapter "watched" as soon as it starts, and "resuming" restarting the chapter at the beginning, but I'm sure things will get ironed out.

 

Podcasts - Just started playing with this. Adding by rss is easy, and things load into the server nicely. Offline support is a must, and this alone would make me dump Podcast Addict I think. Also, a feature that seems to be missing in a lot of podcast apps is already present in Emby, keeping watched status marked across devices. This is really great. Resume support would really make this pop.

 

eBooks and comics - Currently not really supported, but I've added a bunch to the server, and at least can see something pretty and keep track of some things I have. These really need manual metadata and can be a pain, but I'm totally ok with it as long as there's a way to view them in-app eventually.

 

Bottom line, it's pretty amazing whats happening here and the devs are knocking it out of the park (also need to mention the forums. Yes, Emby has it's issues, but where else can you make your voice heard and get not only same day, but often same hour dev responses?). I can't wait for the day I can throw a movie on my tv, then grab my tablet and continue reading a book or comic, run out of the house and boot up some tunes, continue an audiobook on my lunch break, then continue the movie from my phone, plus do all of it when I'm on the other side of the country!

 

I've noticed a lot of issues lately, and some posts being pretty hard on the devs, but just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."
