Luke 42077 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Perfect example, just saw this on cnn: http://johnlewis2014.com/ Republicans are setting up fake websites about democratic candidates in order to trick you into donating to the wrong campaign. The page looks like a page designed to promote John Lewis and donate to his campaign, but if you read it, it's actually trashing him. And that's what the republicans are saying in their defense, if users would just read the page then nobody would be getting tricked into anything . 1
Luke 42077 Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 And even on the donation page "Make a Contribution Today to Help Defeat John Lewis". Nobody sees that either
gcw07 347 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 lol. Though looks pretty clear to me that your donating against him. But then again I guess I read things especially before giving money.
bigjohn 753 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Yep, nobody reads anything. Perfect example...have you heard about the republicans putting up fake websites that look like they are for a democrat candidate but really are for donating money to defeat them? It even says so right on the donation page but people still fall for it. 5
candybar213 7 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I read everything carefully especially the price that I gave my bank info to so he can deposit 1000000 to it for me just because he has to much money. Nothing gets past me The Candybar213
candybar213 7 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Are you trashing reps for making a page that apparently states it's purpose, or the people that donate and don't read what they donate to? The Candybar213 1
AdrianW 1058 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Yep, nobody reads anything. Perfect example... Ha - I see what you did there
WWWestern 94 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Republicans are setting up fake websites about democratic candidates in order to trick you into donating to the wrong campaign. Is it "fair play"?!
Redshirt 1487 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Regardless of which side of the fence you are on, this is one thing that drives me bonkers with American politics. The constant bashing of one candidate by another, typically without any indication of what the basher is actually going to do if elected in place of the bashee. It's just "Politician A is a scumbag, I'm politician B and I support this message" 1
Sparrowlogins 18 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 That's Brilliant, except in Britain John Lewis is a Middle market department store. I wonder how many British people have not read that and thought about donating to the demise of a shop!
trooper11 63 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) Ah politics, one of those no no topics As far as for people not reading anything, that's been an issue for a long, long time. In the tech field, you see it all the time. Most users are unwilling to read instructions no matter how easy you make it for them. Edited February 8, 2014 by trooper11

ronvp 92 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Those that do not read are just sheep who believe whatever they are told and when they question what they are told; one can just tell them what to believe! Bad politics is fed by non-reading voters and the bigger the government the more we are told what to believe and controlled by non-readers!
ebr 16169 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 In the tech field, you see it all the time. Most users are unwilling to read instructions no matter how easy you make it for them. Yes, that was exactly Luke's point. We are fighting that issue constantly .
trusselo 225 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) This is why i watch The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report, they will point out any political hypocrisy, regardless of which side it was, but... its almost always the republicans. Im Canadian, to me its like a funny soap opera, and if it werent for the fact that the US plays a major role in the worlds economy and even more specifically Canada's economy, I would have been hoping for total meltdown back in the bush years. and that site is attempting to be misleading, if you only read the www. address, the big Image, first line of the paragraph, and the big blue Donate button... it could happen i guess, whats the education rate like in Montana? and for people not reading whats right in front of you... it happens to us all, especially to some of use that frequent a forum alot, we start to skim, and have waisted posts, because we missed one word or post, like i did last week asking how to re-order my collections, after i did, the webUI browser told me how in that info box at the bottom, then i saw the FAQ page here on the forum.... NizZ8 3 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 I like how this post is filed under General Help. Well played Luke
Abobader 3464 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 LOL ... Luke, buddy, I can not read a damn thing lately But that how thing normally go tho with male human, the damn female "read" everything
ronvp 92 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 If democrats were reading they would vote republican..
sydlexius 297 Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) I don't take this as a "political" topic, per se. It's merely a logical conclusion of what happens when societies at large lack in critical thinking skills. How often do you get cogent responses when you send lengthy emails to your bosses? How about when you email their bosses? It's a common habit to take shortcuts in reading rather than proper perusal, and campaigns such as these are exploiting that tendency. *EDIT: fixed some typos. Edited February 9, 2014 by sydlexius
ebr 16169 Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Yeah, the point here is one of how people absorb (or don't) textual content. Let's not go off the rails into any politics . 1
ronvp 92 Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Weird, and I was thinking it was all about trying to have search engines find MB ..
chef 3810 Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Wow, that is just wild! It should be said that the ploy used for this targeting campaign is accually quite brilliant.
sydlexius 297 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 If only this sort of cleverness could be put to use for the benefit of all the constituency
ebr 16169 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 So my mom calls me today and says: I'm at Wal-Mart looking for a new mouse with a longer cord. I'm looking at this one - it says "Microsoft Wireless Mouse 3500" but nowhere can I find where it says how long the cord is... 3
Redshirt 1487 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 At least your mother didn't stack books beside the desk to keep moving the mouse over rather than pick it up and reposition it when she ran out of desk :S Parents are great 1
