Randomacts 5 Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 I recently installed emby again as I was hoping that the issues that I had previously would be fixed by now.. anyways the first scan is taking forever and is slowly ticking up for the past 8 hours or so and is currently at 53.1% server-63624273166.txt
Luke 42083 Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 It is normal for the first scan to take a little time. What you can always do is go into server library and metadata settings and disable features that you don't need. For instance, lots of images are being downloaded so it appears you enabled the option to download images in advance. There is a warning right underneath that checkbox that it will cause scans to take significantly longer. @@Happy2Play should we just not allow this to be turned on? 1

I was thinking longer would make it take a total of 9 hours or something not... however long this is going on for and it is only a a small chunk of my media lol... Edited March 5, 2017 by Randomacts
Luke 42083 Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Try going into library & metadata setup and disabling features that you don't need.
Randomacts 5 Posted March 5, 2017 Author Posted March 5, 2017 Try going into library & metadata setup and disabling features that you don't need. Are you sure it is that option.. from what it looked like the other options that warn me would be the bigger issue.. "Download images in advance By default, most images are only downloaded when requested by an Emby app. Enable this option to download all images in advance, as new media is imported. This may cause significantly longer library scans." That just downloads all the media for the shows that I have right? That shouldn't be an issue for my internet connection unless it is actually a complete dump of the emby database onto my computer lol. "Enable chapter image extraction Extracting chapter images will allow Emby apps to display graphical scene selection menus. The process can be slow, cpu-intensive and may require several gigabytes of space. It runs when videos are discovered, and also as a nightly scheduled task. The schedule is configurable in the scheduled tasks area. It is not recommended to run this task during peak usage hours." or "Extract chapter images during the library scan If enabled, chapter images will be extracted when videos are imported during the library scan. If disabled they will be extracted during the chapter images scheduled task, allowing the regular library scan to complete faster." Is what I thought the reason that it took awhile to scan.
Luke 42083 Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Both of those things will add time to the library scan. The default behavior for images is to just save the URL and not download until needed, but you are overriding that to have all images downloaded during the library scan. Trust the defaults in other words.

You have to remember the providers have request limits so Emby has to throttle its request. So if you want everything now Emby has to slow down how fast it can make those request. @@Luke I haven't has to do an initial scan in awhile but to me the percentage indicator is deceiving. It can take an hour to get to 50+% then sit there for 8-10 hours only moving a fraction of a percent then jump to being done. We could always put a warning that initial library scan can take 24+ hours depending on the size of your library.

Trust the defaults in other words. Then that still sounds like the behavior that I want.. but it sounds like the best way to do it is to get the first scan in and then go back to enable that option to do a refresh. Defaults are defaults for a reason.. but options are always good.
ebr 16187 Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 .. but options are always good. This thread is actually a fairly good case to refute that statement .
brios 1 Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 This is normal, my initial scan took one week. After that, it works fine.
crusher11 1102 Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 Would "download images in advance" do anything if images had been previously saved with the media? Would it still look online first, causing issues, or would it see the existing images and not bother? I've always found it takes quite a while to load in media I've moved, renamed, etc even though all the metadata and images are saved with the file.
brios 1 Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 I don't know, I left all settings at default. The initial scan took forever, but eventually finished.
crusher11 1102 Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 I wasn't asking you specifically. I'm going to be moving all my files onto a NAS soonish, so anything I can do to speed up that first scan I'd like to get in place.

Luke 42083 Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 If they're already there, then no it won't download images again.
