farside847 39 Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 Quick question, in the new preview is there a way to see if the video is direct play or being transcoded? Hitting up/down/star brings up the nice new OHD which I love. But I would like to make sure my files are not transcoding.
ebr 16177 Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 If you can't tell by looking at the video, why does it matter? Turn on the debug options in the settings in the app. However, I will warn you that this may make the app perform worse. I haven't run any empirical tests to prove this but it wouldn't surprise me so I suggest running with it off and just enjoying the show.
speechles 2055 Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 (edited) No clock, no play method.. pretty as it is, why is the boxart important to see? I would think a clock and play method would be much more valuable since they have relevance. Also, the OSD is really janky. Press OK, then BACK, then press OK agan. Do it pretty quick. The OSD appears below the video player. There are other ways to cause this, but the OSD isnt always popping up, but popping under. Also, you can do a ton in the background as video plays. It doesnt slow a thing. This means, its simple to add a sleep timer and various other "do things while video plays" tasks. Dont under-estimate things. Btw, turn on debug doesnt give a better OSD, was it supposed to? Also turn on debug never shows me the "send debug report" button wherever that is supposed to be, never seen it. Just because you dont have value in something, doesnt mean its acceptable to say "why does it matter?" The fact that was used as an answer is disheartening. Edited March 3, 2017 by speechles
ebr 16177 Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 Apparently something in one of the later releases broke the playback method display with debug options on. I'll have to see what happened there. Edit: The issue is that you have to re-start the app after enabling the debug options.

It's not just transcoded vs direct play informationals that we are looking for. Sometimes you simply want to know the video resolution you are watching? 5 channel or 2 channel audio? As @@speechles mentioned above, the current time. The OSD is the perfect place for all of these and many more to put the polish on the app. Edited March 3, 2017 by econ
ebr 16177 Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 All that super-geeky technical information may come in some incarnation at a later time but the display already shows you the audio track to which you are listening. In fact, it even shows you the title as defined in the track data. So, if you are listening to Director Commentary and have labeled the track as such, it will show that to you.

Hi ebr - quick question about this. I've only recently switched over to emby for my systems and am wondering if the transcoding info is available anywhere else other than looking at the dashboard? I have multiple users that stream from my mediacenter. I also play some video games on this center from time to time. If too many streams are actually being transcoded rather than direct played this reduces the available performance on the center causing both gameplay issues and bad streaming. Just in order to troubleshoot, it would be nice to see if something is transcoding or not on a particular system. For example - I have streams delivered to chromecasts, rokus, ios devices, the web app, and emby theater. When problems crop up in that situation, knowing if a particular system is forcing a transcode over a direct play can be vital to a full head of hair! Thank you!

In that situation, the dashboard gives you that information now. And the Roku app will too if you turn on the debug option, but you are talking about looking at multiple devices at once, so the dashboard is what you would want to look at.
Sivision 0 Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 Sounds good - I'll take a look at using debug mode if I run into any issues with emby on roku going forward. Thanks for the info ebr!
