Internet Access to Emby Server

Hola!

I have Emby set up on my QNAP, and have the premium version. But I am having problems getting a connection from outside of my local network; inside it works ok.

I see the "Emby Connect" button at the top here on the forum and when I select that, it opens the login screen to my Emby server. But the link shows:

http://app.emby.media/home.html

So it does not appear to be going through the link my Dashboard shows of:

http://xxx.xx.xx.xx:8096/

Can someone confirm this is correct?

Thanks!

Using Emby Connect eliminates the need to use the server's ip address to connect.  The server keeps Emby Connect updated with its current ip.  The URL that will show when you use Emby connect is indeed app.emby.media.  If you open up the server log I believe you can see your ip address referenced there.

Well, something is amiss! My domain IP address is "200.xxx.xxx.xxx", but a search through the log does not show any mention of "200.".

On the other hand, my local internal IP address of the QNAP box is all over the place. And, if I try putting in the domain address into my smart phone, or browser on a different subnet, It will not connect.

If you are local and are using Connect it will use your LAN access and if you use Connect while remote it will use your WAN Access.

Bingo,  yes this is correct.

Ok, that makes sense! But I thought using a different subnet might force it to go through the Internet, ie

the QNAP/Emby box is on 192.168.a.xxx while my PC/Wireless phone are on 192.168.b.xxx.

So it looks like nothing is getting through from the internet, The forwarded port 8096 does show "Open, Filtered" in the Cisco cable modem/router which the QNAP is connected directly to. I am not sure if that means filtered to reject or filtered to accept, LoL, tho based on results it seems to be reject.

If I send my Emby WAN IP address and :8086 port info to someone else, should they see the login screen, even if they are not a registered member yet?

Yes, anyone can see the login screen if they go to [your server ip]:[server port]

Yes, WAN:8096 will take anyone to login screen.

Well, it does'n take me there :( I get the old:

This site can’t be reached

200.xx.xx.xxx took too long to respond.

Try:

ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

I did try canyouseme.org and it shows both 8096 and 8920 not blocked. Locally using nmap, i show the QNAP port 8096 as "Open, Unknown". So everything port wise seems to be ok.

So you are saying your WAN and port are not working.

Did you forward the port properly?  Just because 8096 is open to the world doesn't mean it goes anywhere.

Whey I put in the domain IP address:8096, I get the timeout error message. So it does not appear to be working.

Well, I can't figure out how to do the inline image thing, so have attached a snapshot of the port forwarding screen in the Cisco router. The QNAP box IP address is "16" so it agrees with the setup. Don't know what else to check there.

In another section, the router status also says "No Ports Restricted", for what it is worth.

The site CanYouSeeMe.org shows both ports open, but like you say, that may not mean much I guess.

Locally, the Linux util nmap shows the ports "open" on both boxes.

FYI if you're trying to access your external address internally, it won't work unless you tweak your router settings. I can't either, don't have time to figure it out, and don't have a use case where I'd ever need to. However once I shut off my wifi on my device and I use 4G, I'm right in... Might be your case too.

I think you need NAT loopback enabling on your router.

The router should detect that the actual address is internal and then use internal routing.

Make sure you have DNS setup as well, such as Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4).
