Windows user, making painful switch to Linux

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I am currently in the process of trying to make the switch to Linux and (despite the huge learning curve) am very slowly getting there.

I am experimenting with Openmediavault on a new server that I have put together and it seems really good.

I now want to move Emby from my Windows server but have a few initial questions about insallation:

1. The instructions for installing on Debian Jessie are as follows:

For Debian 8.0 run the following as root:

echo 'deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/emby/Debian_8.0/ /' > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/emby-server.list

apt-get update

apt-get install emby-server

You can add the repository key to apt. Keep in mind that the owner of the key may distribute updates, packages and repositories that your system will trust (more information). To add the key, run:

wget http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:emby/Debian_8.0/Release.key

apt-key add - < Release.key

apt-get update

What, exactly is adding the repository key to apt? and is this something that I should do?  Unfortunately, I am still a bit too novice to understand the explanation link.

2. Openmediavault supports Docker and I note that this is an alternative method for me to install Emby.  What is Docker and which method should I use?

Apologies, in advance, that these are probably really basic questions - will hopefully start to get to grips with Linux in the near future!

Verifies downloads from the repository are untemperred using gpg signatures. Docker is a containerization technology. It is similar to virtualization but without the hardware layer. In terms of which one, it's up to the end user, but if hardware acceleration is something that is a must then stick to the traditional manner
