Some confirmation before I go Emby on devices

Hi,

I just want to make sure I understand everything before I dive in.

I run unRAID and a headless kodi docker connected to a kodi MySQL DB? I have 2 HTPC setups that can upgrade to Krypton natively with no issues. These use the central MySQL backend. All media on the NAS.

I have two old Pivos XD small kodi appliance so running a Linux based Jarvis build. The Pivos won't be upgraded anymore (cant't complain, they've kept up for nearly years). They also use the kodi MySQL backend and stream from NAS.

Emby server is installed on an unRAID docker.

Ideally I can run Kodi Krypton natively on the two HTPCs. Emby on the Pivos boxes and keep the watched state synchro on all devices. If the Pivos can still use a central server DB for the video info that would be great but if it need some to be local then it will run off the SDMC.

What's the easiest no fuss way to achieve this, if at all. Being able to share metadata and artwork with Kodi would be another added bonus. My sick beard can notify Kodi and emby but my ideal state woulbe that kodi and Emby DBS update each other or my headless Kodi can do any cross updating.

Any clues on how to set this up. I was just going to install Emby plugin in the Pivos Kodi boxes and sees where it takes me but if I screw up the wife and kids might disown me. tIA.

Oh, I've paid for Emby Premiere if that makes any difference

Yes, entirely possible.  Emby server handles the metadata/sync notifications, and the Emby for Kodi addon handles the syncing on each client.  One thing to keep in mind is that the Emby addon will overwrite your existing Kodi db, so I would also backup your kodi db prior to the migration in case you have plans to roll back.  Also, make sure you remove the sql info from advancedsettings.xml or it'll mess w/ the Emby sync process.  One of the advantages of the Emby/Emby for Kodi setup is that the sync process is Kodi version agnostic, so you no longer have to update all Kodi instances to the same version in order for syncing across clients to work.

I'd try it on 1-2 of your clients first just to make sure it's doing what you expect, and to ask questions here if you run into issues prior to destroying your marriage if something goes awry.

Thanks. But the above scenario would mean all clients need the Emby for Kodi plugin, or just the small appliances?

All Kodi clients, assuming you want all your clients in sync.

I'm not sure that is possible with the headless kodi I have running on the unRAID server, but if Emby becomes the central core instance everything else hangs off then maybe I don't need the headless kodi anymore.

Kodi is a client, so I don't understand what you mean by headless. By definition it has a head. If you mean the mySQL integration, then yes, Emby replaces that part and all you're left with is an Emby server somewhere (on the unRaid box I'm guessing, in your environment) and a bunch of Kodi clients syncing with the server.

Edit: like I said, try it on 2 clients after backing up your Kodi DB. I was sold within 10 mins of making the switch.
