Overriding series recording setting for manual recordings

Hello,

There have been a few occasions when I have forgotten to set my DVR to record the season premiere of a show. When I get around to setting up the series recording, I set it to only record new episodes since I don't want previous seasons. However, I need to set a manual recording for Episode 01 since I've already missed the premiere of that season. I found that I can manually set this recording but it seems when Emby runs through its scheduled tasks, Emby ends up cancelling the recording because it thinks it is recording an old episode. Is there anyway to make the behavior of Emby ignore manual recordings when there is a series recording for new episodes only?

I ditto this behavior. I had to manually set the series to record all episodes so the repeat episode will record. Now I have to remember to change it back after it airs.

@@denz, remember we talked about this and WMC has similar behavior, right?

Yes that is correct the only time wmc will record a repeat is if something happened when it premiered that could be a power failure out of disk space. To record that episode again it has to be a manual recording you press record button only once or click record. Logically that makes sense why should it record a repeat if you already watched it that is why you have record new or record all.

@@denz, ok so it will allow you to manually add one that the series recording filtered out?

That is correct I will show you an example. I have series recording  My Kitchen Rules and there are repeats during the day so wmc will not record them but I can still go into them and record them individually and as you can see in the bottom picture it has recording indicator.

Ok thanks denz. We'll look at this.

Hi @@Luke, I'm not sure where things stand with this request, but wanted to add some thoughts about error handling on bad recordings since this also is affected. One of my shows yesterday did not record properly and the recording ended up getting corrupted. In WMC, the app would handle this error and automatically reschedule a recording of the next showing of that particular episode. With Emby though, I have to manually search for this episode then when I schedule it, it automatically gets deleted from my queue because it's not a new episode. So in summary, can we not only have the override option but also have automatic rescheduling occur when a recording (and any subsequent post-processing) does not complete successfully? Thanks

Yes that's a good idea as well.

@@Luke is there any way for us to track these feature requests to see when they get implemented? It's been pretty frustrating when a recording doesn't happen or gets corrupted and I can't set a manual recording to override.

@@dougw03, we took care of this several releases now so you should be able to override individual programs of a series. Let us know if this helps. thanks !

Thanks @@Luke. I'll make sure to test this out. Do you know if automatic rescheduling was also implemented in the case of a corrupted recording? This is a very handy feature since often times a replay of that episode will happen a few hours afterwards and by then it's usually too late to reschedule a manual recording.

What exactly do you mean by corrupted?

Good question @@Luke. Here are all possible scenarios where I would want the DVR to automatically reschedule a recording:

  • The recording ended prematurely
  • The recording did not start or started late
  • The signal strength was weak during the recording causing audio/video dropouts
  • There was an error with the post-processing transcoding
  • A tuner was not available due to other recordings happening at the same time (how are recordings prioritized BTW?)

Yes those are great ideas, thanks.

Thanks @@Luke! I'm not sure the level of effort it would take to integrate this feature, but imagine it would be quite high. As an interim solution, it would be great to have a menu option (when browsing the episode of a corrupted recording) with the ability to find "other showings." This was a handy feature in WMC that allowed me to easily find the next showing of the episode that did not record properly. Currently I have to manually try and find the episode in the guide which can be cumbersome.

P.S. Not sure if you want me to start another thread, but I had a corrupted recording recently. I was trying to record S03E06 "Off Brand" of Better Call Saul and Emby only recorded for 3 minutes. I think I have attached the relevant logs. Would you mind taking a look and letting me know what happened here? Thanks!

There's three logs in there. Which log file was from the time of the recording? Thanks.

Sorry wasn't sure what to attach, just did a ctrl+f and searched for the episode and posted everything relevant. Here are the three logs that occurred at 10:03PM after the recording ended abruptly. Note this show should've recorded from 10:00-11:03 PM (start on time, +3 min padding)

It looks to me like you restarted the server while the recording was going on so that is why it stopped at 3 minutes.

Thanks for investigating Luke. Would it be possible to have Emby Server prompt the user when Windows is shutting down that an active recording is currently ongoing? WMC had this feature and the user would have to force shutdown if they wanted to proceed with a Windows restart/shutdown.

Yea it's a possibility for the future. Thanks.
