Question about delete function

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So I deleted a single title from Emby with Metadata Manager like I have done before.  And the entire parent folder went POOF.  In all honesty....I am not even pissed.  I mean, I am vibrating like I have an adrenaline rush or something...but angry...no.  I think it is more of the shock of having to start from scratch.

And more than anything....I would like an explanation as to what went wrong....even if it was me somehow I am open to that.  But going back and retracing my steps, there is no way I can do a top level "delete" from within metadata manager.

I attached my log file and you can see all the deletes and you will see I likely named my server wrong considering the circumstance :P

Hi, yes a delete request came into the server on a folder:

2017-02-11 13:28:25.7218 Debug App: Deleting item, Type: Folder, Name: BDR, Path: E:\MediaNET\Movies\BDR, Id: 0e6914fa-4977-d6e6-690a-59dc3421e19d

Wow, sorry for your loss.   I hope it was 'human' error and not software, as that's a major issue.  Not sure if I've ever used the Metadata Manager to delete my content, but I have used the single delete media option within an actual media container in EMBY UI

I disable delete in my setup because i think that should be done in the file system, plus there is no guarantee that something cant go wrong in emby.. But I have read of a few of these "oops" incidents...  Maybe there should be something mentioned in the "are you sure" popup that shows what files will be deleted, especially if its at a folder level, "This is a FOLDER! Path XXX/XXX/XXXX are you sure?"

Yeah...that was the parent folder but there was nothing in that folder outside of folders.

Oh well.... c'est la vie.  Thanks Luke.

The only time I have ever used Metadata manager was when there was some "artifact" lingering.  My management too of choice is the file system as well.  Now I will avoid it like the plague lol.

My wife says "Might not be a bad thing.....you had a lot of stupid shit on that thing" lol

Should be able to easily recover the data granted you have already starting writing new files to that drive.

I had already already tried before I posted.  ...none of my multi-gig files were recoverable though I had tons of xml, nfo and jpgs.  There were a couple processes actively doing stuff while this was going on (namely extracting downloaded archives from my VM server to my file server).   I think it is what helped me stay calm....going with a large array like this I opted for RAID6 with 2 hotspares.....never counted on losing everything without some sort of cataclysmic event lol

It's all good though....  All our photos and home videos were untouched (plus I got them backed up on my One Drive) so honestly as long as those are safe, I am ultimately at peace.

I often preach to people at work about never putting things in a location that can't be backed up unless you can afford to lose it...well....how do you back up 30+ TB at home ;)  I have no choice but to accept my fate.

I feel your pain. The cost of data redundancy really does get crazy expensive as the overall storage grows. I only have 16TB of capacity with zero redundancy right now as I rent a dedicated server and the cost of storage is outrageous however I am lucky to have a speedy internet connection that allows me to keep a complete backup on Amazon Cloud. That being said even though my backup is encrypted there is always that risk that Amazon deletes my data.

Extra hard drives purchased as needed.  Only around 25 tb but I'm not expecting 5 more to change my plan.

Quote from Contact (1997): "Why build only one when you can build two for twice as much money"

My 30tb server has a twin 30tb server that mirrors everything. It's expensive, but if one of those 2 explodes, there's always the other.

This has also happened to me, I only lost around 2gig, (first week with emby).

I found out that somehow emby while importing movies, registered one movie twice, and instead if pointing to the .mp4 file, it pointed to the f:\server\movie directory.

.. So when I deleted the movie, the server started to delete the whole directory..

I agree with most people that had accidents; Emby should not have permission to delete whole directories; just remove from Emby library view, yes, but never delete straight from file system.

On the other hand, once a tv episode is watched, and the user choose to delete it, I wish it would also delete related files (poster/nfo)

I don't dare to use the delete function anymore.. and since this now happened again, @@luke there must be some kind of unknown bug?

I can see myself making this mistake. This is why I handle all deletion from the file system. Deleting media is completely disabled in Emby.

Sorry for your pain. I am in the process of a new build. The new build will be the active server with archive drives in the current for a back up as well as a off site back at a buddies house. I have been in your shoes when I lost a 8 tb hard drive it sucks having to rebuild.

The only problem with this is how it takes to upload.  For like 30TB, you are looking at probably a year or two to back up everything from the last time I tried.  The flipside to that is, how long would it take to restore it all.

I'm contemplating saving the money there, and instead just build a mirror server.

If you haven't written to the drive yet (or even if you have), have you tried software such as Recuva (free) to see if you can get the media back? The media is there, its reference was just removed from the FAT table and therefore the OS has no way of referencing the file.

A file allocation table (FAT) is a table that an operating system maintains on a hard disk that provides a map of the clusters (the basic units of logical storage on a hard disk) that a file has been stored in.

Recuva can rebuild this FAT reference as long as the file has not had any 1s or 0s written over it. Edited by dvgmar

I just duplicate the storage but I'm not using this for live TV.  I might feel differently if this were my only access to media.  What I'm NOT doing ever again is re-ripping all those darned discs, hence the full backup.

I did 16 TB in a month and a half (settings in Backblaze panel set to max).   Not HORRIBLE but that is based on your net speed too.  And to restore, they will mail you a or multiple hard drives with your data, and refund you 100% of the money if you return the drives to them.  I hope I never have to..  But worst case I would rather have it...

I went through a house fire not too long ago, It made me think about in-home backups.  My drobo did run after the fire (days of dehumidifying) and I was able to save everything, but the drives were not happy!   All of the drives had permanent over heat SMART errors directly after starting them lol...
