I like the chromecast for music, you can pick, play, pause, skip from your phone or a background window on your pc.   If you dont have HDMI there is always the chromcast audio.

I do like the new roku app though..  :-)

Chromecast audio. If you want better audio quality hook the Chromecast audio to a DAC via an optical cable. You will need a mini-toslink to toslink cable which isn't included with the Chromecast audio.

This is what I use

i think you are better off with a chromecast audio,  there is no real hdmi to rca cable, the roku would have to go to a screen of some sorts to select and load emby..  Then you have to buy and audio breakout cable if you dont plan on leaving a tv on to out put the audio.

If you are at all concerned with sound quality you will be disappointed with an HDMI to analog converter. If you need a display you may want to consider an Android tv with a proper USB DAC.

Yea quality is very important.to me especially coming through a power amp.

Never heard of chrome cast. so connect the chromecast to  modi 2

then to my pre amp . How do i select the music from qnap in a setup like that.

I don't want to deal with cd's anymore.,Any song any album within seconds is the way to go.

my components; Adcom gfa 5500..Adcom gtp 506...Behringer fbq3102.

You don't need a DAC like the Modi if you don't want as the Chromecast has a pretty decent internal DAC but if you are more serious about audio quality an external DAC is always the way to go with prices ranging from $50-$5000+. I would suggest just picking up a Chromecast Audio for now and if you like how it works you may want to add an external DAC down the road. You play music from your QNAP by using the web app on a computer, or the mobile app on your phone or tablet but instead of the sound coming out of you computer or mobile device it comes out of the Chromecast. You then use the app to start, stop, pause, skip, queue up more tracks, etc. You can close the app and the music will continue to play. You can also use a Chromecast to stream music from services like Google Play, Music, Spotify, Tidal, etc. Honestly it is the best $40 I've ever spent on my audio gear and I have $1000's invested in it.

@@JERRY1, why do you expect it to come from the stereo? How did you connect them together?

Using chromecast audio,,, emby music on the qnap should play through the stereo.

from chromecast audio >modi 2>stereo inputs

What Emby app are you trying to play from? Can you please provide a little more information about the steps that you took? Thanks !

You shouldn't have to load your media on your tablet or device.

You can use the emby ios or android app to cast media using chromecast. Or the web app with Chrome. Does that help?

In elaboration to what @@Luke said. The way emby works is the server application needs to be installed on a machine and that server application needs to be ablw to access your stored media. That media can be stored locally (the easiest solution) or on a network attached storage drive (more complicated but not anything outrageous).

Once you have the server installed and it has media that it can access, then your apps can either play or in your case cast you a variety of devices.

If it's an android device, you simply open the emby app, login to your server (either through emby connect or directly), browse to your media, select to play it and then cast it to your chromecast. There is a "cast" button on the top right of most of the apps. I'm an iOS person and an Apple TV so I use airplay to cast live tv to my Apple TV but it is essentially the same concept.

I don't have a chromecast so I'm not 100% sure of what buttons you select to chromecast on an android device but I would assume its similar. None of these options require you to have the media locally stored on your tablet/phone. That's the whole point of emby.

Personally I use a Squeezebox server to manage my music with either a Logitech SB3 Classic or, for ultimate audio quality, a Transporter or Logitech Touch as a head end. Squeezebox server will run on a Qnap without problem. There are apps for phones and tablets to give full control and there is even a Alexa app you can use to control things (in development but free to try and moving quickly).  Although Logitech owns the technology all development is community led with their approval and support. It was the superb Squeezebox experience that encouraged me to look for something similar for video which is how I alighted on Mediabrowser nee Emby. Same culture and enthusiasm, server based with a loyal user base producing lots of add-ons.

Squeezebox is free, with only a couple of mobile control apps having a minimal charge. Not taking anything away from the incredible Emby but for music, Squeezebox rules - it has been in development for 17 years. You can deploy devices (Touch, Boom, Radio, SB3, Transporter, SBlite, OrangeSqueeze etc) around the home quite cheaply with everything synchronised or not.  You need to select your Chromecast audio from the list of devices on your network (Top right corner of app, see picture below). Once active all audio should go through the Chromecast and not your tablet.

If you can play music on your phone from your Emby Server you should have no issues playing music sent to your Chromecast.
