barrydocks 0 Posted February 5, 2017 Posted February 5, 2017 (edited) So I have come from Plex primarily as I could never get their app to work properly on my Sony Android TV. I am impressed with Emby thus far. I would like to set up live TV with a DVR function but I am very confused about how to achieve this. As of yet I don't have any hardware other than my media server, so it's basically a blank canvas. So a couple of questions: 1. Can I simply install a couple of FreeSat or FreeView cards into my server? Or do I need to also use a back end such as TVHeadend? Or do I need a completely separate box to act as a TV server? 2. I would like to have multiple TV streams so that different channels can be viewed simultaneously on various devices, do I need multiple DVB cards? 3. Am I better using FreeSat or Freeview here in the UK? I am sure these questions have been asked before but I wasn't able to find specific answers. Apologies if they are duplicating other posts. Thanks for your help. BTW my server is running Ubuntu 16.04 server edition Edited February 5, 2017 by barrydocks
maegibbons 1287 Posted February 5, 2017 Posted February 5, 2017 (edited) Ok Really easy. I am in the UK. My server is also Ubuntu 16.04 Get a HDhomerun Connect tuner from amazon and put it on your network. This provides two tuners worth of freeview. If you want more buy more HDhomerun tuners!!! Emby recognizes it straight away. Subscribe with Schedules Direct for your EPG data. You do NOT NEED any other software or plugins. If you want Non Freeview channels subscribe to a IPTV service. Hit me up in a PM if you want suggestions on this. I have one HDHomerun tuner for Freeview, and 4 channels of IPTV for everything else AND Freeview. I can therefore record/view up to 6 channels at a time over all my devices. KR's Mark Edited February 5, 2017 by maegibbons
barrydocks 0 Posted February 5, 2017 Author Posted February 5, 2017 Mark, thanks for the reply. Are there any options for using a pci card based tuner? Also I am leaning toward some sort of satellite tuner mainly as I think it's possible to have multple streams off one tuner (I might be wrong on that) and the the FreeView signal is somewhat patchy in West Wales! IPTV will be a non-starter as the broadband here isn't fast enough :-(
maegibbons 1287 Posted February 5, 2017 Posted February 5, 2017 If you are going to other Tuners then you will need to use the plugins. Go to the Nextpvr and TVheadend sites to see what hardware they support. Where do you live? Krs Mark
barrydocks 0 Posted February 5, 2017 Author Posted February 5, 2017 (edited) In Barry, but my folks live near Carmarthen and that's where the problem is - they've already got a sat dish on the roof which give a much better channel selection than the freeview aerial so the Homerun box is the only one that's supported naively by Emby? Anything else would need a back end application? NextPVR is windows only -right? So it will have to be TVHeadend for my ubuntu server? Edited February 5, 2017 by barrydocks
maegibbons 1287 Posted February 5, 2017 Posted February 5, 2017 I believe that to be the case. I do not have experience with other tuner cards in recent years. I used to run a program called showshifter with hauppage cards but that was late 1990's!! Tvheadend is well regarded. What speed is the broadband? Krs Mark
barrydocks 0 Posted February 5, 2017 Author Posted February 5, 2017 What speed is the broadband? like 3meg at a push - they recently had a trial of BT sport but nothing would stream, iPlayer struggles
gnollo 17 Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 So did you use a satellite tv card in the end? I have a dual DVB-S2 card in my HTPC and I am thinking of turning into an emby tv server
