Petronsky 0 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Hey there! After a conversation with a coworker a few days ago, he convinced me that I'd be able to download the emby server on my desktop where I have all my movies and media stored and I'd be able to install the app on my phone or my sons Xbox and stream the movies on those devices. Last night I downloaded the server and then the app to the Xbox and when I tried to watch the movies my only option is to purchase the emby premier subscription. Is this correct? I was under the impression that the premium subscription offered other features that I don't need or want at this moment. I just want to watch my movies in different parts of my house. Did I do something wrong or was I incorrect in thinking that I could watch my own movies in my house for free? Oh, also when I tried the app on my iPhone it can't even find the server when I log in. Thanks.
Happy2Play 9780 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Depends on the app you are trying to use. Web Browsers provide you free access to all of your media. Premiere provides Enjoy full access to Emby for Android, Fire TV, iOS, and Emby Theater.
Petronsky 0 Posted January 29, 2017 Author Posted January 29, 2017 Well I just downloaded whatever emby app popped up. Would it be better to just login via the website on the xbox?
Luke 42077 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 You can use the built-in web app on the Xbox One yes, but the interface is not really designed for that. But yes it will work.
arrbee99 1815 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Think you can do that, though am not sure as I've already got Premiere and I don't use Xboxes. It might help to check if you've set up libraries and stuff OK by trying it out on an ordinary PC browser, Chrome or whatever. Check stuff plays OK, its done some of the pretty stuff (artwork, metadata, etc). You can, I think, also get the address of your server from the Dashboard page of the server web Interface and try it on your iPhone, for which I presume there's an Emby app (haven't got an iPhone either).
Petronsky 0 Posted January 29, 2017 Author Posted January 29, 2017 OK, so it works fine on the desktop I installed it on that houses all the movies. The Xbox One app shows all the movies and such, but won't play them without purchasing premiere, which I don't want to do just to watch my movies somewhere other than my desktop. The app on my iPhone and when I try to log in on a laptop prompts me to select a server but then says no server is available to connect to. This question is to Luke: You say I can use the built in web app on the xbox one but it really isn't designed for that. What exactly is it designed for? thanks
Luke 42077 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Hi @@Petronsky for iphone you can always manually enter your server address. On the server selection screen just click Add Server.
Luke 42077 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 This question is to Luke: You say I can use the built in web app on the xbox one but it really isn't designed for that. What exactly is it designed for? thanks The interface for the built in web app is designed for mouse or touch input. It's not really designed to select items with remote control arrows like you would expect from a tv app like Emby Theater. So this means you'll have to use the mouse pointer function on the xbox one gamepad. It will work just fine, but Emby Theater is easier.
Luke 42077 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Ok, on the iphone server selection screen, I can see why you might be under the impression that it can't connect. When there are no servers found automatically, it displays the text: No servers are available to connect to. If you've been invited to share a server, make sure to accept it below or by clicking the link in the email. The Add Server button is right underneath that. We will adjust the text that is displayed to help make you more aware of that, thanks.
Happy2Play 9780 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 This would also assume your phone is on the same network as the server(ie wifi). Otherwise you need to ensure port forwarding is done for remote access.

I hit connect and it fails to connect, I try to manually add the server address and it fails to connect. Yes, I am on the home wifi while trying to connect using my iPhone, laptop and Xbox One. So far the only other device to connect is the Xbox One, but will not play the movies unless I upgrade to Premiere. I guess my question then is do I have to purchase the subscription in order to watch my movies in my home on the Xbox One? Edited January 30, 2017 by Happy2Play Fixed the quote
maegibbons 1287 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 (edited) Hi Generally, you can use the web browser on any device to view your media for free. That includes IOS, android, PS4, xbox and evereything else that has a web browser! If you use the designed app for a particular platform you either have to buy that app for that particlar platform or take a subscription out which covers all apps on all platforms. What a lot of people do is take out a premiere sub for a month or two to see if Emby is for them and then either cancel it or upgrade to Lifetime. I did the later and have no regrets. ax3l 7 Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 the xbox should also play by DLNA i think, you just wont get all the pretty stuff

I guess my question then is do I have to purchase the subscription in order to watch my movies in my home on the Xbox One? As others have pointed out, there are free playback options on the xbox one. IMO these options are no good from a usability standpoint. Using the web UI with a contoller is a pain. Using DLNA pretty much ever is to be avoided. Either buy premier to get access to ET and all the other feature that license allows or look at buying Ember for Emby on the Windows Store. That's an Emby client that can be purchased separately from Premier, unlike Emby Theater at this time, which will run on the xbox one. 1
