I'm now converting my old DVDs and a doubt has assaulted me. The top and bottom bands, should I cut them or leave the video with them?

Removing them makes the video files slightly small but it changes the aspect ratio. Will emby/apps correctly handle the aspect ratio after the bands are removed?

Or, when the band are there, will emby detect them and cut/ignore if the film adapts to the tv screen?

Are they actually part of the picture, or just padding?

I leave the letter box to maintain the proper video aspect. Removing them will cause devices to stretch the video and cause display problems.

They are original ripped dvd files, so they are part of the picture and can be cropped.

The DVDs that I've ripped just had padding, and the software I used to rip the disc, ripped without embedding the padding.

Crop them.  They will scale correctly.
