aspect ratio thumbnails picture library

Hello,

I noticed that sometimes Emby generates my picture thumbs in a strange format.

My folderstructure:

FOTO\yyyy\yyyy-mm-dd description\picture-xxx.jpg

Where

yyyy: year

mm: month

dd: day

i.e.

FOTO\2016\2016-08-12 [VAKANTIE] Zeilen Willemstad Nederland\IMG_0617.jpg

I noticed that for almost every year, my year-overview (i.e. FOTO\2012) looks like:

586e0ee587df7_20170105101438.png

As you can see: all of them are square thumbs which is OK for me

However, one one folder (2016) I get

586e0f24659b6_20170105101651.png

It seems that the thumbs here are having a random format.

What is the reason for this?

is it possible to have the same "layout" for my thumbs as on the other folders?

kind regards,

B

it decides based on the aspect ratio of all the images in the folder.

???

@@Luke, this would mean that ALL my images of previous years would be in square format?

This is definetly not the case...

The above snapshot, displays folders, containing all kind of pictures. Most of them just made with iPhones or other smartphones and having a "normal" aspect ratio.

Also: all pictures IN the folder are having square thumbs, even with a an aspect ratio of 3456x5184 i.e.:

So for some reason, Emby decide to

- have non-square thumbs for subfolders of my 2016 root folder (subfolders of other years are having all square thumbs for subfolders)

- have square thumbs for images despite their aspect ratio

I just want to understand the logic of Emby here, and how to influence it. The square thumbs are OK for me.

kind regards,

B

based on all the images on screen at any given time it calculates the mean aspect ratio and then uses that to choose between square, 2:3 or 16:9

@@Luke, can you elaborate this a bit more?

For me it looks more like a bug.

If I take another folder i.e., I get

587409da477ef_20170109230731.png

all nice square thumbs for all folders.

Within a folder, I get

58740a215a396_20170109230902.png

none of them are square, so the the mean aspect ratio is not 1:1.

Why did emby decide to generate other thumbs here?

How can I force Emby to decide 1:1 thumbs? It's much more compact on portable devices and looks less disturbing to me

Sometimes we dont know the aspect ratio in advance and when this happens we generally pick square.

I never know the aspect ratio "in advance" :-).

Isn't it with analyzing a pic for creating the thumb that you know the ratio?

Stil: same question again: is there any obvious reason why I have 85018 square thumbs from the past 16 years  and only 4156 other thumbs. And why these all are situated in 2016. And above all: is there a way to re-generate the thumbs of last year and fool Emby so "it doesn't know the aspect ratio in advance" :-)

cheers,

B

Is there any unique characteristics between the images that are different?  Maybe something in the metadata?

Hi Luke,

Almost ALL of them are square...

My folderstructure:

5875dbe73391a_20170111081534.png

- all YEAR-root-folders have square thumbs. Maybe this is because I placed one square image "folder.jpg" in the root of that folder

- all EVENT-folders (subfolder of YEAR) have square thumbs. Don't know why because they contain all kind of content, but I thought this was a feature (and is OK for me)

- only 2016\EVENT-folders contain random thumbs. Don't know why because they contain all kind of content (just like other YEAR\EVENT folders)

@Happy2Play: no idea.

Maybe the following logic can explain something:

- emby takes the FIRST image it encounters and generates thumbs for subfolders according to this aspect ratio

- maybe I forgot to place an initial square "folder.jpg" in the 2016 folder. (I can not confirm this)

- emby scanned all YEAR-folders, found the square initial square "folder.jpg" in the root, generated square thumbs for the EVENT-folders

- emby scanned the 2016-folder, didn't find any image in it and started scanning it's subfolders, generating thumbs of other aspect ratio's (according to first image found in the EVENT subfolder)

- maybe I added the square "folder.jpg" afterwards in the 2016 folder

- a new thumb was generated for 2016, but NOT for it's subfolders

Maybe this is the logic that drives Emby?

Any other suggestions?

And how is it possible to re-generate the EVENT-thumbs in my 2016 folder?

grtz

Bart

PS.

The reason why I placed the "folder.jpg" in the root of the YEAR-folders was to have a nice overview of my archive:
