Linking Emby Server to Window Shares

Hello,

Finally getting round to setting up the Emby App on my qnap and have hit a snag that I hope someone can help me with? I have been using a windows vm on the qnap to hose the server but for obvious reasons this is not ideal.

I have most of my collection on the qnap drives, however I also have windows machines with overflow content.  That content is on windows 7 machines in shared drives.  I can not link those drives in the qnap emby app?  Communication and sharing between the qnap and the windows 7 PCs is being done via a workgroup and has no issues.  The VM on the qnap is running win 7 and was/is functioning and connecting via UNC.

In the app I have tried /ip address/folder, also /server name/folder, the network share option provides no results.  I am not sure were to go next?

I have spend a few hours reading up on this and some of the posts give some information but I do not understand it 100 percent.  I have tried creating a local share on the qnap but I can not seem to get that to link to a network shared folder either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated?  And if one of the usual folks answers thank you for your support, I have been reading these forums for 3 years now i greatly appreciate your time.

Cheers

Si

Are you running on the latest server ? I had a recent issue on win 7 emby pc adding folders to my library but that has been fixed now maybe you having the same issues the best way to find out is to post a emby server log.

The mono runtime does not support UNC shares, so what you need to do is mount the share locally within your OS, then you can add the local path to Emby Server.

I will check on if I have the latest version. I downloaded it yesterday.

Luke,

Thanks for the response I understand what you are saying and I was worried it was that way. I was not sure if spanning the 2 platforms was what the alt path section of the server was for. Long shot. Can't seem to mount the shares in the qnap to pull them into Emby. Seems like the qnap does not have permission in the file section to access the shares. But it's hard to tell. Basically this is now I qnap question so thanks for dividing it out for me.

Thanks again.

I did not in fact have the latest server or the right qmono.  I am using the TS-451s and the app store has an older version available.

For the next person to get hit with this.  Go to the pinned thread in this section of the forum and download the emby file onto your PC and unzip it.  Do the same thing for qmono 4.4.2.11 on the qnap site, yes you will need to create a user for that forum.  Next go to the app center, and what is not listed anywhere is to click on the wheel on the top right, the settings section, and select manual installation and browse to the qmono file then the emby file.

Will update when I figure out how to mount a remote share on the qnap.  I took a look into this last night and got nowhere.  Its not in aggregation section like you may think.

Luke,

Do you know how to path Emby to remote shares on the qnap? I have found the local drives but can not find a file structure to the remote connections. Or do you have to somehow link a remote connection to a shared file?

Thanks!

Luke,

I do not think the below works anymore:

"The mono runtime does not support UNC shares, so what you need to do is mount the share locally within your OS, then you can add the local path to Emby Server"

It looks like the folder mount option has been replaced with "Remote Connection".  I think this was done to take away some of the manual steps of mounting a folder.  The remote connection is like a mapped drive in windows, however given the nature of the beast it not part of the qnap file structure.  When browsing for libraries on the qnap you can only access the file structure and I have yet to find a way to link this up to the remote connection.  I may be missing browsing to the remote links as the file structure is a bit of a wild card to me but I have had a decent look around.

I saw some variable behavior on the remote connection.  It would not connect, then the next morning it was good to go although I changed nothing.  At this point I would suggest putting all media content on the qnap local drives.  If I get this figured out I will post the solution, but even then there are a lot of variables on this topic.

@@breezytm how are you handling this? Thanks !

I don't use external storage. I only use the NAS local storage. If I wanted to do something similar to what I think he is attempting to do I would have mapped the windows network share to the Public QNAP folder or attempt to create a symbolic link. In Emby, I would simply navigate to /Share/MD0_DATA/Public/<share folder>

[~] # mkdir /share/Public/WindowsShare
[~] # mount.cifs //192.168.12.34/sharename /share/Public/WindowsShare -o username=user,password=pass

P.S your password would be in clear text. You may want to use a credentials file or something. Also, I don't see that connection persists at reboot.
