Heckler 147 Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 Having just got back from the xmas break and booting up emby once more... I got the notification of the update to 3.1.2... and once again ran into the infinite update loop that sees emby fail to restart after the update repeatedly... forcing the user to do a manual update either over the top or to grab the source from github and extract. This has been an ongoing problem for a long time and is still to be addressed... it's been a recurring problem over the last 7 or 8 updates... maybe longer as I've simply lost count. It's caused problems that have resulted in me having to reinstall from scratch once again earlier in the year. There have also been many threads about some of the poor design decisions that have been made in updates, changing things that work perfectly fine, are not broken in any way... and do not need to be changed at all. So when I saw this change being made when viewing episodes within the browser... it got my back up... there was absoloutely no need for this change and I'll be as blunt as I always am... it's hideous... it's a terrible idea and simply doesn't work, it doesn't flow, it makes everything look and feel clunky and tacked on... as if no thought what so ever had gone into it's design at all... as if some one just thought.. f*ck it, that'll do... I can't be bothered to make it look/work properly. Yeah, I'm blunt and will no doubt piss people off that think only nice things should be said. But bad design needs to be called out for what it is, and this is a truly terrible design that makes it look worse, makes it ugly... words actually kinda fail me at how awful it looks. Please for gawds sake... concentrate on fixing the issues instead of making changes that aren't needed and only serve to make emby look worse... Every bad design choice pushes people away, and I see threads of people asking for fixes to issues that go unanswered whilst cosmetic changes that aren't required get implemented time after time. I honestly think that focus has been lost, that the core of emby will remain unfixed whilst the look and feel of it continues to degrade. Happy new year... let's try and get everything back on track in 2017 please. 1
tvinhas 14 Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 I have a suggestion: go to github and open a PR with the code to fix these issues. Or even better, since it's open source, fork the project and create your own. 1
AgileHumor 123 Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 Umm, that image view is because YOU added the Cover Art plugin from the catalog. If you don't like the way those images are showing, uninstall the plugin and READ before you do things. Devs don't work for you...or me. 1

No it is about the addition of "More from Season X" section on the item detail screen. Where before you had arrows on the left and right to go to the previous/next episode. 2

Or even better, since it's open source, fork the project and create your own. I wish I knew how to... trust me that's exactly what I'd do... heck if I knew how to do those things I'd be volunteering to help develop emby. It's not a question of fixing it... it looked and worked perfect before it was changed... So in a very simple way of looking at it... wouldn't it just be a case of changing the code back to what it was in the previous version 3.1. If I'd have known that this change was being made... I would have turned of updates entirely because I feel that strongly that it's ruining the look/feel of the browser/client... I have in fact now reverted to 3.1 from my backup and turned of updates, and I refuse to update again whilst that remains in it. Umm, that image view is because YOU added the Cover Art plugin from the catalog. If you don't like the way those images are showing, uninstall the plugin and READ before you do things. Heckler 147 Posted January 1, 2017 Author Posted January 1, 2017 OK... now I'm just even more annoyed. I reverted to 3.1.0 to get rid of it... But it appears that the infinite failed upgrade loop has made changes that reverting to the old system file hasn't fixed... because that hideous thing is still there. I am seriously considering reimaging from my last backup 2 weeks ago (the last backup I took before going away over xmas). Or if anyone can point me to a clean 3.1.0 download on github because I can't find one.
Happy2Play 9781 Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 but It's also the complete removal of actors in any episode now. @@Heckler What do you mean? The next row shows cast and crew, even in your screenshot. But the episode has to have guest stars or director/writer as usual.
AgileHumor 123 Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 (edited) Dude, I have 3 serious issues now causing major (to me) problems for years (like collections crossing in to the "kids movies" library)....but I'm patient...because I have no choice. You have no right to yell when you have no skills to fix. You have no voting rights except your subscription fee.Now stop questioning the devs whom do actually do the "magic"...and post your log files with detailed repro steps. Deathsquirrel 745 Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 (edited) To be just as blunt, I like the new UI element just fine. Perhaps you aren't the dictator of design. Can you make a suggestion without a throwing hissy fit??? My grandmother would probably say something about catching more flies with honey but, under the circumstances, Penny Arcade seems more appropriate to quote so, "Don't be a dick." For the same of novelty, try explaining why something doesn't work for you. They might be able to work with that. Edited January 1, 2017 by Deathsquirrel 1
Heckler 147 Posted January 1, 2017 Author Posted January 1, 2017 @@Heckler What do you mean? The next row shows cast and crew, even in your screenshot. But the episode has to have guest stars or director/writer as usual. Some episodes I looked at showed nothing at all, no writers/directors or any guest stars... but as the infinite update loop completely fecked everything up... even reverting to 3.1.0 left elements of 3.1.2 still in the browser... I was forced to restore from a backup from a few weeks ago... Under no circumstances am I ever upgrading whilst this hideous thing remains nor whilst the infinite upgrade loop failure isn't fixed. This isn't the first time it's fecked everything up and I'm sick of having to spend countless hours fixing what worked perfectly before the so called 'improvements' were made. I spend more time fixing screw ups with updates in emby than I spend on every other system I support combined. There needs to be a much simpler way to revert back to a previous build without having to jump through so many hoops... restoring my system took more than 14hrs just to fix what the update had broken... and I don't mean the hideous cosmetic change... I mean a simple restore previous version rather than being forced to restore a system image to fix feckups. It worked fine before... then the update fecked it all up and cost me over 14hrs of wasted time to fix it... there are no logs to post because I restored from a backup image to fix the mess it created.
