ZanderKeen 72 Posted December 16, 2025 Posted December 16, 2025 Im looking forward to trying Emby Theater on Linux on the steam deck in game mode. I recently replaced several smart tv devices with very powerful mini-PC's running SteamOS too & I couldn't be happier!
softworkz 5066 Posted December 16, 2025 Posted December 16, 2025 We can't make any promises regarding SteamOS. I've been able to get a VM set up for SteamOS. It's been really painful to get it working, and still it can't do Game Mode, only desktop mode with KDE Plasma, but that appears to be working at least... 1
ZanderKeen 72 Posted December 19, 2025 Posted December 19, 2025 Hmm. I wonder if that just means game mode isnt loading all the dependencies needed as in the kde desktop mode. ill play with it when its out and i got some time. either way itll still work for my setup.

What I meant is that Game Mode as a whole is not working in the Hyper-V VM. But meanwhile we got actual feedback from one of the private beta members. Current state is that it does actually run in Game Mode and also plays audio and (probably) even video, but the video is not visible. The new app has a secondary window for video rendering which gets synchronized to the main window normally, but that obviously doesn't work in Game Mode. There's likely no X11 environment in that case and I'm not sure whether there are ways to still do this. Without having a device (or emulator with Game Mode working), this is probably not solvable. What's definitely possible though, is to fallback to the HTML video player (like the web app is doing). in case of Game Mode. Well need to see... 1

Well need to see... as far as i'm using steamOS (or atleast the other similar that imitate steamOS) the non steam games that run in gamemode is using gamescope in most case, also incase you want to try, there is bazzite-handheld version, cachyos-deckify (the most identical ones, because it's same Arch based as SteamOS) and nobara-handheld that really 99% emulate steamOS experiences, (i'm using cachyos-deckify btw), also some chromium / electron based app need to add --no-sandbox in launch parameter (here is an example of old emby-theater with video overlay glitch that some user reported tho) Spoiler Edited December 20, 2025 by Riezel

I'm guessing that was the reason it was done with X11 instead of wayland then as well, because of the lack of persistent window positions on wayland (which drives me mental lol)? 1

In fact, the app has been ready for months. About 90% of the testing we've done in the private beta group has been about windowing behavior on the various desktop environments, because even with X11, this is quite challenging... 1

At least on my test system it looks like it fails due to lack of Vulkan support. If you could pass through a dedicated GPU to Hyper-V you could probably get it working. 1

(looks like it's from dnf4, rather than the current 5) sudo dnf config-manager --add-repo URL should instead be sudo dnf config-manager addrepo --from-repofile=URL Edit - Looks fantastic so far. On first launch all the main issues I had with the old one are fixed. UI works while playing, mouseover to bring it back up. Performance is great and its properly decoding using GPU. Launch and playback both started instantaneously . Edit 2 - Spoke a little too soon, Fullscreen doesn't properly hide the taskbar, It disappears then pops back above. I'll have to look more into this on my end, might be a way I can fix that in KDE settings. Edited January 7 by Nestar
