MSattler 390 Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 I give the dev's a lot of shit, a lot of which they bring on themselves. But I do give credit where credit is due. I bought a new Receiver today which has better HDR support than the previous one. Amazingly, HDR is enabled when playing 4k HDR content through Emby. It plays direct, the Samsung TV shows the popup that HDR is working. This is something that currently does NOT work on Plex. So congrats! 5
MSattler 390 Posted December 30, 2016 Author Posted December 30, 2016 @@Luke So HDR does work, but only if I leave "Enable Refresh Rate Switching" disabled. If I turn that on, I do not get HDR, and playback is choppy.
Luke 42077 Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Interesting info, thanks. @@ebr and i will review. Thanks.
tvinhas 14 Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 So HDR does work, but only if I leave "Enable Refresh Rate Switching" disabled. What's the gain of enabling that option?
CBers 7450 Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 What's the gain of enabling that option? Causes the TV refresh rate to match the frame rate of the video.
ebr 16172 Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Causes the TV refresh rate to match the frame rate of the video. Yes, but that doesn't always equal a perceivable improvement in playback as some of today's TVs handle the pull-down very well. I'm guessing your TV only supports HDR in certain modes. Have you tried toggling the option to try and match the exact rate?
MSattler 390 Posted January 2, 2017 Author Posted January 2, 2017 Yes, but that doesn't always equal a perceivable improvement in playback as some of today's TVs handle the pull-down very well. I'm guessing your TV only supports HDR in certain modes. Have you tried toggling the option to try and match the exact rate? Well I have, when I enable the option HDR stops working. It's a Samsung KS8000, which is a top of the line 2016 Samsung TV, so I sincerely doubt that is an issue. Why would Samsung have one of their top of the line TV's support HDR in every resolution except the native resolution / 24P? And the Owners Manual would show that HDR is supported at 24p. The HDMI connection with HDMI UHD Color set to Off supports up to UHD 50P/60P 4:2:0 [8-bit] input signals,... ...the HDMI connection with HDMI UHD Color set to On supports up to UHD 50P/60P 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 [10-bit and 12-bit] input signals [which of course includes from 24P to 60P, 4:2:0 to 4:4:4, 8-bit to 12-bit input signals].
ebr 16172 Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Well, the app simply asks the display to switch to a particular mode. If, when we do that, HDR doesn't work, the best conclusion I can come to is that it isn't supported in the mode that we switched to. By playing with the option of whether or not to try to match the mode exactly, you might get slightly different modes of the display - which may or may not also affect this support. So, I was suggesting that you try toggling that to see if it makes a difference. Of course, if you're dealing with 25 fps content, then this won't matter much because the exact match would be the same as the rounded one. But with 23.976025 content, it can.

ebr 16172 Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 What happens if you turn off our auto switching and switch the display manually?
MSattler 390 Posted January 3, 2017 Author Posted January 3, 2017 What happens if you turn off our auto switching and switch the display manually? Cannot figure out how to change the input on the TV. I tried changing the Shield itself to 4k 23.976Hz, and the movies still would not playback HDR. I'll check with the Shield folks to see if HDR should be working at 4k 23.976Hz.
plexrefugee 0 Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 (edited) Would be interested if this is now working as expected.. Also, did you get HDR working directplay using the built in Emby App for the KS8000? Edited November 15, 2017 by plexrefugee
