diaz1510 154 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Weird problem and not sure what creates it. I will be using ET and randomly I will notice after watching some media that the 3 symbols in the upper right (minimize, maximize, and "X") are gone. I then select the person silhouette to try to exit that way but the exit options are missing. The only way to shutdown ET from here is to open task manager and close the application there. Problem is, it won't fix until I do a complete PC restart. Then, after a random length of time, it does it all over again. Below are some screenshots: Notice the lack of the 3 symbols in the upper right corner And here is what it looks like when I click on the person silhouette:
Luke 42078 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 If you're on Windows 10 and you've installed the Windows Store version, that version doesn't have those buttons. So perhaps you've just run that one.
diaz1510 154 Posted December 19, 2016 Author Posted December 19, 2016 No...I haven't..I've been using ET since it's inception and was directly from your website. It works normally after a reboot of the PC and then starts this issue randomly...
diaz1510 154 Posted December 19, 2016 Author Posted December 19, 2016 Here are some screenshots I just took when it is working properly:
Luke 42078 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Sounds to me like a graphics driver crash that gets cleared up after rebooting.
diaz1510 154 Posted December 19, 2016 Author Posted December 19, 2016 (edited) That's weird that it would only effect the buttons that allow me to exit ET...and I have no issues in any other applications... Edited December 19, 2016 by diaz1510
Luke 42078 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 This application depends on Window Transparency features in the operating system (Windows). In the event of a graphics driver crash, Aero and DWM generally shut down. Aero and Desktop Window Management are what provide the transparency features in Windows. I bet you could probably fix the problem temporarily by restarting them and ensuring that they're running properly. Of course, a reboot is probably easier.
Luke 42078 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 In terms of where to go from here, i think confirming this would provide useful info. I bet you could probably fix the problem temporarily by restarting them and ensuring that they're running properly. Of course, a reboot is probably easier.
Heuer 76 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 I have seen this and although I can't reproduce it at will I seem to think it happens after an update. I close ET from the Taskbar and restart and the problem goes away.
diaz1510 154 Posted December 20, 2016 Author Posted December 20, 2016 (edited) @@Luke ok, it just happened again. Before I am rebooting, I'm checking for the DWM process and it looks like it's running in the task manager. Not sure hot to restart it as when I ask to end the task, it says its will shut down, but it doesn't do anything. I'm not sure where or how to restart the aero process in windows 10. I am not sure what causes this to happen or how to recreate it. I did notice that I have 3 instances of Electron running, is that normal? Edited December 20, 2016 by diaz1510
diaz1510 154 Posted December 23, 2016 Author Posted December 23, 2016 OK, I'm really trying to find some way to recreate this problem so I know what causes it and more importantly, how to fix it, but I'm at a loss... I guess it's possible to be something outside of ET causing it, but I'm not sure how to troubleshoot it. Any assistance would be appreciated, thanks.
Marc_G 95 Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I saw this once, a week or so ago. Was not able to reproduce.
diaz1510 154 Posted December 23, 2016 Author Posted December 23, 2016 Yeah, it's happening pretty frequently to me...a few times a day
Logos302 86 Posted December 24, 2016 Posted December 24, 2016 Rather then trying to reproduce. Check your graphics driver version and see if there are update to that or updates to the OS.
diaz1510 154 Posted December 24, 2016 Author Posted December 24, 2016 Rather then trying to reproduce. Check your graphics driver version and see if there are update to that or updates to the OS. I had already done both of those right after I posted comment #10...no change...
Jack Burton 98 Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 I've come across both issues. First, the minimize, max, etc, if those are missing I force close and restart ET, which tends to fix it. You said you have to restart your PC, maybe see if electron.exe is still running? I've had that before as well and force closing it fixed everything. As for the missing buttons, I find that happens if you press enter/ok while in screensaver mode, or if I go too deep into show/movie menus. Either way it fixes for me by just selecting home, then trying again.
diaz1510 154 Posted January 1, 2017 Author Posted January 1, 2017 yeah, the HOME fix doesn't do anything, I have to do a complete PC reboot to get it to stop doing it. When it starts this behavior and I go into Task manager, yes, Electron is still running and that's the only way I can get emby to shutdown. But it doesn't fix when I restart emby...I have to reboot my PC even after closing emby via Task manager to get it to work right. This is still happening and I'm not really sure how to fix it. Consistently using task manager to shut an app down shouldn't be the final answer. Although it accomplishes what I need, I'd like to figure out the problem so that I can use the application as intended. It's possible it could be something unrelated to emby that is the root cause, but emby seems to the application that triggers the issue and is the only application effected.
Luke 42078 Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 because as stated earlier, Emby is probably the only one requiring window transparency to be functional on your system.
diaz1510 154 Posted January 1, 2017 Author Posted January 1, 2017 OK, that's a fair assessment and you're probably right. I'm just trying to reach out to anyone in this "community" that might have some insight on how I might fix it, even if it may be outside of Emby's lane...I tried all the fixes stated above and nothing is working, so I was hoping someone here might have a little more knowledge on how I might troubleshoot this further because, although I'm not entirely an idiot, it's now gone beyond me as to what may be the solution. Simply asking for some help here...
Jack Burton 98 Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Have you tried doing a fresh install? ANy issues I've had are generally fixed by reinstalling the app. Maybe try rolling back to a previous version as well and see if the issue persists?
diaz1510 154 Posted January 6, 2017 Author Posted January 6, 2017 Yup, just tried it and it worked for the first few hours and it's back it it again.... This is getting frustrating...anybody else able to help with some possible other troubleshooting tips?
Luke 42078 Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 I would check your windows event viewer, both application and system. actually see if you can export those to a file and i'll take a look, thanks.
hardlock 1 Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Just out of question, do you guys have windows 10 or 8.1 and hide your taskbar? I found that my brothers computer kept having this issue. After making it fixed it stopped doing it. In windows 10 I think the taskbar is the only desktop item to have transparency on. There is no 'aero' in windows 10 or 8.1. Wondering if the taskbar, when hidden disabled parts of windows composition.Just a thought. 1
