Long delay before starting a movie

HI All,

I did research through forum topics to find same as my situation but I cannot find an exact match of mine. So Sorry if this was already discuss.

The problem I currently have is when I start playing a movie through the web interface, the movie can take about 2 or 3 minutes to start. the stranger thing is if I stop it after it start reading, I restart it and it restart instantly...

I wonder if someone already saw this kind of problem and have a good idea of what it is?

Thanks

Do you have subtitles turned on?

Could this just be due to transcoding and either having too higher of a setting for what your CPU can handle? Just my thoughts, I'll leave it to the techies though. PS - Just on what you said ebr, when emby transcodes, does the subtitles get embedded/burnt into the transcode or is it just an overlay?

Yes, in fact I did noticed that there is many subtitle logs during the waiting time.

Also, I must also say that It could be related to the fact that this happen most of the time when I play new file that I just put in my Emby library.

When Emby found it, theses file are added to the directory:

movie.nfo

landscape.jpg

poster.jpg

When I start the movie, it take about 3-4 minutes to start but during this time, there is 2 new files added:

fanart.jpg

logo.jpg

Could it be related to the generation of these file? I found some error log related to the logo.jpg

Hi Strugglez,

Thank you for the idea but I have enough power for that. For proof, when I start it on the second time, it works great instantly!

Also, I just did notice another point.

More heavy is the file, and more longer it take to start the movie... When I try it on a tv episode, (about 500 meg) it take about 15-20 seconds.

I'm being downloading a new movie, I will retry it with this new movie but I will try to do a full refresh of the metadata before starting the movie... keep you inform.

Please attach the complete emby server log. Thanks !

Hi Luke,

I just did a new test with a new movie and both JPG file seems to not be the cause. Maybe the SUB?

I attached all generated logs for this test.  It start around 22:41:00 and I've started the movie "Colonia"

Thanks

Yes, the subtitle extraction. The reason it starts up immediately the next time is because we save the extracted result for future use. the extraction process should be a little quicker with the next release of emby server. thanks !

Hi Luke

Thank you for the response. Is there a way to disable this feature?

Thanks

Don't request subtitle display when playing the item.

Or, if you need them, acquire text-based external ones using our facility to do that.

Hi ebr,

FYI, I didn't request any subtitle display. I just pushed the play button and wait. But it's ok, it's not a big deal, just wanted to know why this happen. I guess if this happen to me, this should happen to everybody?

Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.

Then your settings on the server in conjunction with the actual media caused them to be chosen.  Investigate the playback settings under your user icon in the web app.

Are you looking in user preferences/not the dashboard?

Hi,

Yes, I did find the playback setting in the web interface. But I didn't change anything in this section, just in the server setting page.

I'm being testing for which parameter on the server setting affect the first play. Be back soon.

It is the subtitle extraction.

Ok.... now, I'm owned..... I'm trying to get the same behaviour than I had and I'm not able to get the subtitle extraction with the lag at the first start...

Anyway, Thank you all for your help. All works great now.
