Marc_G 95 Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 (edited) Hi folks, I just bought a Tronsmart Ara X5 plus which is a self contained Windows 10 machine, to be used solely as an Emby Theater client and occasional web browsing on the big screen. Emby server will be hosted elsewhere. Is there a guide somewhere on how to tune down all the Windows 10 extraneous stuff we don't need, to improve stability and reduce overhead use of resources on the Windows 10 client? I dont want Cortana bugging me in the middle of my films and such !! Thanks In advance. Marc Edited November 29, 2016 by Marc_G
Luke 42077 Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 Not really, in my testing with windows 10 at default settings I haven't had any real disturbances. 1
Jdiesel 1431 Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 You may consider running the app as a shell granted you don't need any other background applications running at all. I know you mention the occasional web browsing which may cause a bit of an issue if you go this route. IMO this is the best route for a dedicated windows HTPC. You can also use Event Ghost or AutoHotKey to launch multiple apps at startup for a more complex setup by creating a script. You can also launch the full Windows experience by hitting alt-ctrl-del and running "explorer", in fact you could likely even create a hot key to do this if you wanted. https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/30010-set-emby-theater-as-shell/?p=295564 1
Marc_G 95 Posted November 30, 2016 Author Posted November 30, 2016 Thanks guys. I'll do a minimal streamlining of the box when I get it (after letting it update Win10 stuff). I always change the settings for Win updates so that it doesn't become a server for upgrades for the rest of the internet (ridiculous!) and a few other things. Mostly I wish there was a utility I could run that would go through and "strip out the windows 10 app bloat" and just leave me with Windows...
