PhinkBig 9 Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Has anyone tried it with Emby yet? I will soon be working on taking advantage of the new goodies that it offers such as 4K and HEVC. If you have a Chromecast Ultra, let us know what you think about it. Thanks ! Is Emby going to need to update to the new API (Link) in order to Cast in 4K? Or is this just for casting from an Android device? I'm considering ordering an Ultra, but waiting to see if the Shield can receive 4K casting.
Luke 42079 Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 I think we can already do 4k, we just need to get hevc added.
pinkfloydhomer 1 Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 I also have a Chromecast Ultra and I am willing to test, if necessary. Is there any progress on this? I'm especially interested in Emby _not_ transcoding HEVC and other formats that the Chromecast Ultra does natively.
Luke 42079 Posted November 30, 2016 Author Posted November 30, 2016 Hi yes please report your experience. Thanks.
pinkfloydhomer 1 Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 (edited) Hi yes please report your experience. Thanks. My experience is that when I play HEVC 1080p to Chromecast Ultra, I think it gets transcoded to H.264 and not played directly as HEVC. Where can I check that? What do you want me to do and what do you want me to send back? I don't know anything about where Emby is logging these things. EDIT: I just played a 1080p HEVC to my Chromecast Ultra and I could see in the Emby dashboard that it was indeed transcoding to h264. I am willing to test any way needed. Stevendewith 0 Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 (edited) I have been using Emby on my chromecast ultra for the last week and so far it works great. I have had to uncheck the transcoding options though. Direct play works great. I can not get screen mirroring working at all though Edited December 3, 2016 by Stevendewith
Stevendewith 0 Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 264 265 8it and 10bit 4K and 1080p All direct play perfectly on the ultra Transcoding didn't seem to work great but that could be my server

I just tested display mirroring and it seems to be working fine for me. Please note, all it does it display the same content on the screen. So for example, if you open a movie detail screen while connected to chromecast, the same movie will display on the CC device as well. Does that help? Thanks !

I use my iPad to cast from my server to my tvs. I was using xmbc for years but definitely prefe emby Edited December 5, 2016 by Stevendewith
pinkfloydhomer 1 Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 (edited) 264 265 8it and 10bit 4K and 1080p All direct play perfectly on the ultra Transcoding didn't seem to work great but that could be my server How can I see if it is transcoding or direct play? EDIT: I just tried playing the same HEVC/x264 1080p on Chromecast Ultra, and it says in the dashboard that it is transcoding to h264. Why? How did you make it play x265 direct play? How did you uncheck transcoding? EDIT: I found the disable transcoding option under the User section. And then it seemed to work, at least the dashboard is telling me that the x265 is direct played to my Chromecast Ultra. It would be more user-friendly if one could just select encoding quality on the fly in the web interface (and Android interface), whether playing to Chromecast or not. Plex has this, from 64 Kbps to x Mbps to "Original" which I guess is direct play. Is such a feature planned? Edited December 6, 2016 by pinkfloydhomer
Stevendewith 0 Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 How can I see if it is transcoding or direct play? When you go into the manage server screen. On the dashboard tab it lists all your active devices. Under the device it will show what is currently playing and under that it will say if it is transcoding or direct stream.

JulioQc 0 Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 This post seems old but I would like to report trouble playing 4K to the CCU via the Android app. I managed to make the file to direct play for about 30-45 sec and then it suddenly stops. Playback simply stops without warning and CCU return to generic Emby cast screen. No errors seen on app or TV. I've attached logs for that session. Playback starts around line 445 and I see an error 500 at line 522.
