Never_More 19 Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 I read (more than I should) the different areas of this fine site and find one windows OS recommended more than any. Windows 10 .. am I missing something here. I use Windows 7 because of the layout and how it runs so well. I have a copy of 10 and did a little bit of use and found it a lot like a Phone. . I can get use to the changes, if there is a good reason so manyy have changed. So. Why do a lot of emby user like 10 so much . What I'm I not seeing that other people see?
JeremyFr79 228 Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 10 is more secure, far less resource dependent, much smaller foorprint on the drive (7 now bloats to 15+GB by itself with all updates etc) and that's just scratching the surface. 1
Koleckai Silvestri 1154 Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 It takes a little configuration but you can make Windows 10 behave pretty much the same as Windows 7. I don't find it phone like at all. Unlike Windows 8. In addition, you get the capabilities that were mentioned above. I also find it more configurable to meet my needs. 2
Never_More 19 Posted November 14, 2016 Author Posted November 14, 2016 Thank you both for your reply.. I'll create a setup in VMware and take a better look thank you for your input.
legallink 187 Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 Just be aware that if you are wmc dependent you'll have to do some leg work. That being said, I hopped to Windows 10 and overall feel it's a cleaner, smoother, lighter footprint than windows 7 was. 1
PenkethBoy 2068 Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 There are several addons that can take away the "new" start menu and give you the Win7 start menu etc if thats your main issue - e.g. Classic menu etc 1
the-dumb1 135 Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Instead of asking "Why Windows 10", why not ask "Why NOT Windows 10?" I can think of one answer that is applicable to both questions: Windows 7 mainstream support ended January 13, 2015. This means that newly discovered vulnerabilities applicable to Windows 7 will never be patched.

WoW MS is killing 7 already - well I just got the boot in the rear to move to 10 lmao- if 7 has no support for vulnerability then there is no use in using it - I'm lucky I got off mb for wmc as soon as theater came out. now i'm thankful to the emby family for all the work they have put into the theater program. well i'm off to install windows 10. wait - One last question on 10 - what's the version that would fit the needs of running the server and theater versions of emby. Or its it a better idea to use my backup server to run the server program and use the HTPC as a HTPC w/o server on it . as of now I am running Windows home server w/drivepool <<<<(TY emby members) for my backup server-- I know all the answers will be your opinions, but they are much appreciated. sometime opinions are advice hidden as opinions ( the last opinions i received pushed me into using drivepool and I love it- im useing a lot of drive that were lying around my computer room, collecting dust-lol) . .
PenkethBoy 2068 Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 To answer that you need to consider what you use emby for and if you need transcoding etc as its h/w intensive why not install server on both and try them out to see which gives the better performance etc and use the second one as a test server going forward - just have one as the "master" for metadata so they dont fight over updating your nfo's etc As for theatre stick that on your HTPC

Just like Windows 8 on January 10, 2023. And the first version of Windows 10 (released on July 2015**) on October 14, 2025. But each new build extends the lifecycle.
