Mac Mini emby client standalone

I have done some reading the past few days but haven't found anything definitive answering my questions.

OK so I have the latest model Mac Mini i5 2.6GHz 8GB 1TB that has been collecting dust since I bought it about six months ago.

I have maybe put about 10 hours on it and just can't get into OS X. I've been a Windows user since day one and just find it more to my liking.
So I have a few options. One, pack it up and put it away in the closet and forget about it or make some use of it other than what it's meant to be used for.

OK to the question now lol
Is there any way I can turn this Mac mini into a standalone boot to Emby Home Theatre client? Basically OS X would be gone and have only Emby when turning it on. Like openelec does for xbmc.
I don't need to worry about it running the server as I already have an existing server, so it would only be needed as a client. I also have the Apple TV 3 remote which I am hoping would work with Emby as it does with the Mac Mini itself already.

If this is possible I would be very happy to get some help on getting started.

If my only option is hooking it up to the TV as OS X and using it as a computer to run Emby then I'll just pack it up and store it.

Thanks

Can anyone help?

Hi, we do not have a Mac specific client app at this time although it's something we would love to have in the future. Your best bet might be a DLNA app if you really want to use that box. Thanks.

Are there any openelec emby builds that would run on my mac mini replacing osx?

You can install the add-on on any Kodi(14.x-17.x) version.

Yes I do know about the addon but I would need to find an openelec kodi build or something for my Mac Mini. Does this exist? If so where? As I said in my original post I do not want to instal anything using OS X. I want a standalone HTPC box that boots up only to the HTPC software such as Kodi. A good example of these builds are the Raspberry PI and some android boxes.

So what I'm needing help on is being pointed to the right direction to get started with the correct software to remove OS X and replace it with the needed software.

Thanks

Why not just sell it and get a raspberry pi + change

the sell it plan is good... i also have a mac mini intel that i completely blew away osx (bootcamp but with all space dedicated to windows).. and put win7 on for a while... now its win10...  at that point you'd have a number of options

Yes, you can install Libreelec or Openelec on a Mac.  Or other Linux distro.  Or just a straight Windows install (without Bootcamp if you wanted to).

Once you had Windows on there, you could do an Emby Theater setup just like any other Windows machine.

So if i wipe osx and install windows 10 can i set it up to boot to Emby Theater only? I don't want a box that always boots to windows first and then having to tediously open Emby Theatre all the time. I want a true HTCP experience if i am going down that road.

Thanks everyone :)

Well, of course it will boot into windows first, but you can configure windows to automatically start emby theater and have that been what you see once its booted up.

Ok Thanks

I wish there was a openelec Linux-based distribution for Emby that i could use. That would give me a pure HTCP. Plex has a few but i wont use plex. Emby is way batter.

As a stand-alone client though (not Kodi) - not the server.....

Yes that is correct. I would like a custom openelec emby build just like plex has with the raspberry pi and a few other pieces of hardware. I absolutely love it because performance is top notch and it's pure plex.. or emby in my case. I don't really like kodi, never did even with the Emby plug-in. Kodi does lots I will admit but the extras it does I'm not interested in. I just want a pure Emby Home Theatre experience and a custom openelec build would provided that ..but sadly there is none.

Maybe one day somebody will put one together that would run on the Mac Mini.

It's been almost two years since this was last addressed. Funny how I can connect to my Emby server on just about every frickin' device in my house *except* my main iMac Pro computer. Is there *ever* going to be a Mac Emby Theatre app?

Well next year you will be able to run iOS apps in Mac OS so hopefully that goes for Apple TV apps as well. The Emby Apple TV app has come a long way and with the new player, it's awesome!

We also just released linux packages for Emby Theater, so that's a good sign that our availability to look at this sort of thing is increasing.
